“Doing What Is Right – 2” Luke 4: /28/2009 Dr. Dane Boyles

“Doing What Is Right – 2” –Justice for the Christian simply means doing what is morally right according to God’s Word. –In our text for today, this truth Satan tempts Jesus to question. –Let’s examine the biblical account of Jesus’ temptations found in Luke 4:1-13.

Luke 4:1-2 1 Jesus, full of the Holy Spirit, returned from the Jordan and was led by the Spirit in the desert, 2 where for forty days he was tempted by the devil. He ate nothing during those days, and at the end of them he was hungry.

“Doing What Is Right – 2” –In thirty years of marriage James Dobson of Focus on the Family says he never considered committing adultery. –But he recalls one time when Satan tried his best to lure him into that trap.

“Doing What Is Right – 2” –The key to overcoming injustice in your life and mine is knowing your enemy! We must not ignore the reality that there is a Devil who seeks to devour and destroy.

“Doing What Is Right – 2” –The Devil is the evil one (Matthew 13:38) –He is the enemy (Matthew 13:39) –He is the prince of this world (John 12:31) –He is a liar and the father of lies (John 8:44) –He is the deceiver of the whole world (Rev. 12:9)

“Doing What Is Right – 2” –He is our adversary (1 Peter 5:8) –He caused Job’s troubles (Job 1:7 – 2:10) –He is the god of this world (2 Co. 4:4) –He blinds the minds of unbelievers (2 Co. 4:4)

“Doing What Is Right – 2” What is the Devil’s M.O.? 10 The thief comes only to kill and steal and destroy. I have come that they may have life and have it to the full. (John 10:10)

“Doing What Is Right – 2” –One of the obvious ways the Devil fights against God is through temptation. The word temptation means “to entice or allure” to do something wrong.

“Doing What Is Right – 2” THE THREE TEMPTATIONS. –The first temptation. 5 If you are the Son of God, tell this stone to become bread (Luke 4:5).

“Doing What Is Right – 2” –The test is to trust God with your body. If we focus on what we need, we don’t focus on God. When we focus all our attention on the things of this world, it’s easy to put God second.

“Doing What Is Right – 2” 33 Seek first His kingdom and His righteousness and all these things (basic needs) will be given to you as well. (Matt. 6:33) 3 Man does not live on bread alone, but on every word that comes from the mouth of God. (Matt. 4:3)

“Doing What Is Right – 2” “We will not find life in material things, but in God.”

“Doing What Is Right – 2” –The Second Temptation. 5 The devil led him up to a high place and showed him in an instant all the kingdoms of the world. (Luke 4:5)

Luke 4:6-7 6 And he said to him, “I will give you all their authority and splendor, for it has been given to me, and I can give it to anyone I want to. 7 So if you worship, me, it will all be yours.”

“Doing What Is Right – 2” –Satan Offers Jesus the easy way out. Satan tempted Jesus with compromise. 8 Jesus answered, “It is written: ‘Worship the Lord your God and serve him only. (Luke 4:8)

“Doing What Is Right – 2” It is a constant temptation to seek to win people by compromising with the standards of the world. Satan’s tactic is to make important issues grey.

“Doing What Is Right – 2” –Temptation three. 9 The devil led him to Jerusalem and had him stand on the highest point of the temple. “If you are the Son of God,” he said, “throw yourself down from here. (Luke 4:9)

Luke 4: For it is written: “He will command His angels concerning you to guard you carefully; 11 they will lift you up in their hands, so that you will not strike your foot against a stone.”

“Doing What Is Right – 2” –This time Satan misrepresents scripture and misrepresents God. 1 “Did God really say, ‘You must not eat from any tree in the garden’?” (Gen. 3:1) 12 “‘Do not put the Lord your God to the test.’ ” (Luke 4:12)

“Doing What Is Right – 2” The most important thing to witness in Jesus’ temptations is that the Lord used the Word of God to counter any attacks Satan tried to throw His way. –Satan is going to throw everything He’s got at us. –Satan also knows Scripture and is adept at twisting it to suit his purposes.

Hebrews 2:18 18 Because He Himself suffered when he was tempted, he is able to help those who are being tempted.

1 Corinthians 10:13 13 No temptation has seized you that except what is common to us all. And God is faithful; He will not let you be tempted beyond what you can bear. But when you are tempted, He will also provide a way out so that you can stand up under it.

“Doing What Is Right – 2” 22 Flee the evil desires of youth… (2 Tim. 2:22) 9 Two are better than one… (Eccl. 4:9) 9 If you we confess our sins, He is faithful and just and will forgive us our sins and purify us from all unrighteousness. (1 John 1:9)

“Doing What Is Right – 2” Conclusion The secret to overcoming injustice begins with a life following the right way to live – Jesus’ way. We also need to understand that the schemes of God’s enemy too will come across our paths.

“Doing What Is Right – 2” 16 Stop doing wrong, 17 learn to do what is right! (Isaiah 1:16-17)
