6 P’s of Job Interview Preparation Practice Presentation Powerful Interview Post Interview Ponder the Position

Preparation Learn about the company. Ask people who have worked there about the company. Learn about the skills they are looking for. Find out about the company (internet or company web page is great for this.)

Practice Look at commonly asked interview questions and imagine how you would answer them. Role play being in the situation. Make sure you practice actually answering the questions out loud so you know how they will sound.

Presentation Make sure you look appropriate to the position for which you are applying. Dress nicely, be clean and well groomed. Make sure you take it easy on the make- up and cologne/perfume.

Powerful Interview Greet with a firm handshake and speak clearly! Arrive early minutes. Look for commonalities in the office to use to break the ice. Be ready with strong answers to the most commonly asked questions. Sell yourself. Ask when you might hear from them. Thank them for interviewing with you!

Common Interview Questions What can you tell me about yourself? What can you bring to the company? What are your strengths and weaknesses? Why do you want to work here? What training or experiences have prepared you for this job? Where do you see yourself in five years? How well do you work under pressure? What are your hobbies? Why are you leaving your present employing and what will your boss say about you? WHY SHOULD I HIRE YOU?

Questions They Cannot Ask Do you have any physical disabilities? Do you have any children? Are you married or single? Have you ever been arrested? How old are you? What nationality are you?

Other What questions do you have for me? –Ask about expectations? Don’t ask about… –Salary –Holidays or vacation days

Here are some suggestions for follow up questions: 1. How would you describe the responsibilities of the position? 2. How would you describe a typical week/day in this position? 3. What is the company's management style? 4. What are the prospects for growth and advancement? 5. Would you like a list of references? 6. If I am extended a job offer, how soon would you like me to start? 7. What else can I tell you about my qualifications? 8. When can I expect to hear from you?

Post Interview Send a thank you note. Follow up with a phone call after a few days or close to the hire date.

Ponder the Position Be ready to discuss salary and benefits. Be ready to show what you already make and allow them to make you an offer. Most benefits will be company policy and will be explained to you. Consider the pay, benefits and advancement opportunities before accepting.
