8 © HSD Institute. Use with permission. Same and Different Method 1.Name the context or need. 2.Brainstorm “same” and “different.” 3.Debrief based on need. What difference(s) are most significant? Which differences can be changed? Which similarities or differences support, interfere, or are neutral to our work? Why are we the same or different in this way? How can we strengthen our similarities? 4.Plan for action to increase or decrease differences and similarities.

It works best if both sides of an issue are in the room, but you can do it with one imagining for the other Do it repeatedly to see how patterns are changing over time You can put one item on each side and contrast descriptions rather than same or different–run a test to see which is more productive Put space at the bottom for resolutions and action items Else? 13 © HSD Institute. Use with permission. Stretch and Fold Method 1.Start wherever the group is Bored and needing to stretch? Exhausted or confused and needing to fold? 2.Intervene to shift the direction of action To stretch—larger C, more D, looser E To fold—smaller C, fewer D, tighter E 3.Watch closely for a change in “where the group is” 4.Intervene to shift the direction of action
14 © HSD Institute. Use with permission. The system will tell you whether it needs to stretch or fold in a moment The stretch and fold cycle can take seconds or years, and usually both cycles go on at the same time Hold a set of questions you can use with a group to: Stretch–What new things are you noticing? Fold–What are our points of agreement? Else? Tips and Traps Stretch and Fold

HSD concepts, models, and methods would help? Are your option for action? And... Now what? Will you do? Will tell you it worked? And... What? Be ready to share your next What?
