Why volunteer?

Fairfax County Fire & Rescue Combination career and volunteer system 37 total stations within Fairfax County - 12 of them being volunteer stations Paid firefighters at all stations 24x7x365

 Member of the Fairfax County Fire & Rescue  Volunteers provide additional staffing on career units and place additional reserve units into service About Lorton

 BLS Ambulance  BLS/ALS Fire Engine  Supplement staff for Career personnel: 5 th on the engine or 3 rd on advanced life support unit (Medic) Lorton Membership:

 Operational -Firefighter/ EMT -EMT (EMS Only)  Administrative  Ladies Auxiliary Branches of Membership

Volunteer In Station In Training (VISIT) ICS (Online) Level 1 EMT-Basic Firefighter I/II Training Courses

 Required for all new members  VISIT includes:  Overview of Lorton and Fairfax County FRD  Equipment familiarization  Station tour  Introduction into the Volunteer Management System (VMS) website Volunteer in Station Training (VISIT)

 Required for Operational EMS and Fire - Recommended for Administrative  Hosted at Fire and Rescue Academy (FRA)  Evening classes 7p-10p Wednesdays  Weekend classes 8a-4p  Courses include: -History and Organization -Hazmat 1 st responder -CPR -ICS -Cultural Diversity -Fire Extinguishers Level 1 Training

 Held at the Fairfax County Fire & Rescue Academy  Classes held Tuesdays and Thursdays 7p-10p, most weekends 8a-12p with occasional all day sessions  3 month, college-level course with 140 hours of training (not including study)  Once all requirements are completed, you will be Nationally Registered EMT-B EMT-Basic Training

 Must complete EMT and CPAT prior to enrollment  Fairfax County Fire & Rescue Academy  6 month course- Classes held on Tuesdays & Thursdays 7p- 11p & Saturdays and Sundays 8a-5p  Once completed will be certified NFPA Firefighter I/II Firefighter I/II Training

 Required annually for operational members  Includes a comprehensive exam  Class A, Class B, Class C, or Class D Physical

 VISIT  Class A/B physical  Level 1  EMT-B Operational EMS

 VISIT  Class A physical  Level 1  EMT-Basic  Pass CPAT  Firefighter I/II Operational Fire

 VISIT  Bingo  Fundraising Administrative

Time Commitments  Members must have 20 hours per month.  For Operational members at least 10 of these hours must be in an operational capacity  Administrative members will obtain hours through Bingo and other fundraising activities. Hours for Ops

 Fingerprinting and Physical Appointments  Annual Open House  Monthly Meeting -3 rd Tuesday of each month  Bingo Every Monday and Friday Mandatory Attendance

 Lorton’s primary fund raiser  Great way to interact with public  Bingo is held on Mondays & Fridays from 6:00p- 10:30p  Bingo Requirements: -Operational- 2 shift every Month (unless in training then 1 a month) -Administrative- 3 shifts every month

 Transferring from other Fairfax departments taken on case-by- case basis  EMT certification may be transferable  Firefighter transfers on case-by- case basis Transferring to Lorton

 Community involvement  No experience required  Personal property tax exemption  10 free visits per month at county rec-centers Benefits of membership
