Non-Muslims Rights in Islam AWARE Center

The Islamic State should provide…. Protection (from outside as well as inside the Islamic State). Freedom of religion. Basic necessities to the poor.

No Compulsion in Religion “There is non compulsion in religion” (Q 2 v 256) The life and property of all citizens in an Islamic state are considered sacred whether a person is Muslim or not. Quran speaks of human equality in the following terms: The Quran says: "O mankind! We created you from a single soul, male and female, and made you into nations and tribes, so that you may come to know one another. Truly, the most honored of you in God’s sight is the greatest of you in piety. God is All- Knowing, All-Aware." (Q 49 v13)

Jiziya Capitation Tax Non-Muslims can choose to pay Zakat (which would be more) if they wish. Should only be impossed on individuals who can take part in a war but by paying jiziya they are exempt.

Who is exempt from paying Juziya? Women Handicapped Insane Monks Old & sick Children

Protection & Security Life (resident or traveling). Justice and Fairness. Property. Freedom to work, make contracts. Non-Muslims places of worship i.e. churches, should not be tampered with.

Minority Autonomy Judicial Social Cultural

Social Welfare Help for the poor and elderly. Help for the sick.

Social Relations with Non-Muslims Keep family ties. Be good to your neighbours.

Inheritance Muslims don’t inherit Non-Muslims. However, because no official inheritance system, it can be considered as a gift. Non-Muslims can’t inherit Muslims. However, up to 1/3 can be bequeathed.

Status of Jews & Christians in Islam Muslims are required to respect all those who are faithful and God conscious people, namely those who received messages. Christians and Jews are called People of the Book. Muslims are asked to call upon the People of the Book for common terms, namely, to worship One God, and to work together for the solutions of the many problems in the society. In Islamic laws they were given a preferential status among non-Muslims. The Holy Prophet Muhammad (Peace be upon him) permitted Muslims to associate with, to share a table with the Jews and Christians. He (Peace be upon him) also permitted even, to form marriage bonds with them.

Marriage A Christian or Jewish woman can marry a Muslim man. She can practice her faith. Children should follow the father’s religion.

Why can’t a Non-Muslim man marry a Muslim woman? The man is head of the family. Children would be brought up in his faith. He doesn’t acknowledge her Faith. He doesn’t understand duty of Muslims (5 Pillars). He doesn’t understand hijab. He may not support her financially.

Native populations in Arab countries today. 39% Christian in Lebanon. Over 5% Christian in Egypt, Jordan, Syria. Under 5% Christian in Algeria, Iraq, Morocco, Tunisia, Yemen Under 5% Jewish in Algeria, Jordan, Lebanon, Morocco, Syria, Tunisia, Yemen
