Ender’s Game Science Fiction and Fantasy

What is Sci-Fi? Science Fiction is about what could be, but isn’t. It’s imaginary elements are largely possible within scientifically-established or scientifically postulated “laws of nature”. It’s purpose: Exploring the differences of alternate possibilities to complex moral issues.

What is Fantasy? Fantasy literature is about what couldn’t be – elements are inherently impossible. Magic and Mythology are prevalent. Magical kingdoms – alternate worlds. Sometimes, because of the situations presented in Sci-Fi, the two are often confused. Elements of both may be found in Sci-Fi, but because the possibility of the situation coming true, it will be labeled Sci-Fi.

Some History over Sci-Fi Sci-Fi is “speculative writing”. “Gulliver’s Travels is considered to be the first true science fiction novel. Published in 1726

After the Age of Reason … Mary Shelley’s Frankenstein Written in 1831 Shelley was 19 when she published the novel. In the 19 th century, Edgar Allen Poe wrote a short story on flight to the moon.

Then Technology came into play… With the development of electricity and the telegraph, science fiction took off. Jules Verne famous science fiction writer. Around the World in 80 days. Thousand Leagues Under the Sea.

And then became the aliens H.G. Wells War of the Worlds Thoughts of Aliens became a staple in science fiction. The Time Machine The Invisible Man.

With the onset of new technologies, Sci-Fi just continues to evolve. Social – economic issues, social issues Time Travel – travel purposely and specifically Military – conflict between interplanetary factions. Alternate History – what would have happened if… Cyberpunk – human prosthetics, artificial intelligence Apocalyptic – the end of civilization
