When my family moved to America in 2010 from a small village in Guangdong, China, we brought not only our luggage, but also our village rules, customs and culture. One of the rules is that young people should always respect (尊敬) elders. Unluckily, this rule led to my very first embarrassment in the United States. I had a part-time job as a waiter in a Chinese restaurant. One time, when I was serving food to a middle-aged couple, the wife asked me how the food could be served so quickly. I told her that I had made sure they got their food quickly because I always respect the elderly. As soon as I said that, her face showed great displeasure. My manager, who happened to hear what I said, took me aside and gave me a long lecture about how sensitive (敏感) Americans are and how they dislike the description “old”. I then walked back to the table and apologized to the wife. After the couple heard my reason, they understood that the problem was caused by Step 2. Let’s do reading comprehension.

cultural differences, so they laughed and were no longer angry. In my village in China, people are proud of being old. Not so many people live to be seventy or eighty, and people who reach such an age have the most knowledge and experience. Young people always respect older people because they know they can learn from their rich experience. However, in the United States, people think “growing old” is a problem since “old” shows that a person is going to retire or that the body is not working well. Here many people try to keep themselves away from growing old by doing exercises or jogging, and women put on makeup, hoping to look young. When I told the couple in the restaurant that I respect the elderly, they got angry because this caused them to feel they had failed to stay young. I had told them something they didn’t want to hear. After that, I changed the way I had been with older people. It is not that I don’t respect them any more; I still respect them, but now I don’t show my feelings through words. By Jack

Step 3. Let’s fill in the blanks. ( 短文填空 ) The main difference between Chinese and western eating habits is that unlike the West, where everyone has their own plate of food, in china the dishes are placed 1 the table and everybody shares. 2 you are treated by a Chinese host, he will get ready for a lot of food. Chinese are very proud of their food culture and will do their 3 to show their hospitality (好客). And sometimes the Chinese host uses their chopsticks to 4 food in your bowl or plate. This is a sign of politeness. The right thing to do would onif best put

be to eat the whatever- it- is and say how yummy it is. If you feel uncomfortable with this, you can just say a polite thank you and leave the 5 there. Make sure the spout (茶壶嘴) of the teapot is not facing anyone. It is 6. The spout should always be directed to where 7 is sitting, usually just towards from the table. Don’t tap on your bowl 8 your chopsticks. Beggars tap on their bowls, 9 this is not polite. Also, when the food is coming too 10 in a restaurant, people will tap their bowls. If you are in someone’s home, the cook may not like it if you do this. so food impolite nobody with slowly

Step 4. Let’s read and write. Christmas or the Spring Festival? I believe that many people may have such a question in mind—Will Christmas replace the Spring Festival soon? Christmas arouses (引起) increasing attention year by year in China. On Dec. 25th each year, Christmas cards become extremely popular with students. People hold Christmas parties and exchange Christmas gifts. A lot of TV and radio programs about Christmas are on. It seems that this is also an important festival of our own. But the Spring Festival is less appealing (吸引人的) to young people. So, some people are worried whether Christmas will replace the Spring Festival. Some people think this

worry is fairly unnecessary. Why? One reason lies that Christmas only affects Christians (基督教徒), college students and foreign company workers. Another reason is that Christmas is mostly celebrated in cities. Few people in countryside show interest in this exotic (外来的) festival. By contrast, the Spring Festival is the most influential (有 影响的) traditional festival in every family of China. I think it is natural that increasing exchanges and western holidays have been gradually introduced into China. For us Chinese, we should never give up Chinese traditional festivals. For centuries Chinese have been using this traditional holiday to welcome the beginning of a new year. Let’s love the Spring Festival forever.

The date of Christmas every year. 1. The people that Christmas cards are popular with. 2. The places where Christmas is mostly celebrated in China. 3. The The most influential festival in China. 4. The things that we should never give up. 5. Information Card December 25th Students In cities The Spring Festival Chinese traditional festivals

B . 请结合短文内容,用英语 写一篇题为 “How Should We Treat Foreign Festivals?”

Nowadays, more and more foreign festivals are coming into China, such as Christmas Day, Valentine’s Day and April Fool’s Day. Some of them are arousing increasing attention yearly in China. So some people are worried whether these foreign festivals will replace the Chinese traditional festivals. In my opinion, we should celebrate some meaningful foreign festivals because these festivals help us Chinese to know more about the culture of different countries. I think we should love our own traditional festivals and never give them up. At the same time, why not try to introduce them to foreign countries? How should We Treat Foreign Festivals

Nowadays, more and more foreign festivals are coming into China, such as ________________. And the festivals are influential for us (过渡句子), for example_______________________. 第三、四点: We should ( not ) _______,because_________. 第五点: We should _______________________________.
