C WHAT IS THE ADA? A Brief Introduction to the Americans with Disabilities Act Presented by Erin Walton

The ADA is.. Legislation granting civil rights protections to those with disabilities as they seek Employment Public accommodations Transportation State and local government services Telecommunications

C EMPLOYMENT Employers cannot discriminate based on a disability *Must provide reasonable accommodations* If there is discrimination, EEO can help right the wrongs

C PUBLIC ACCOMMODATIONS Public places cannot discriminate based on disability Must provide auxiliary aides (vision/hearing/other) unless it causes “undue burden” All new construction must meet requirements Individuals may sue for discrimination, but no $ compensation

C TRANSPORTATION Busses and bus stations = accessible Trains = one accessible car Private busses and vans must meet public requirements If discriminated against, individuals or attorney general may file lawsuits

C STATE AND LOCAL SERVICES All buildings must be accessible Individuals may file a lawsuit but so can the Attorney General

C TELECOMMUNICATIONS Any public provider must offer services for the deaf Violations are reported to the FCC
