Academic Integrity HUMANITIES 9 Quint

What is “Integrity”? O Integrity: O The quality of being honest and fair. O The state of being complete or whole. Source:

What does integrity have to do with academics? O Duh. O But more specifically, today I want to talk about the “P” word:

What is Plagiarism? O Plagiarism O To steal or pass off (the ideas and words of another) as your own O To use (another’s work) without crediting the source O To commit literary theft O To present as new and original an idea or product derived from an existing source Source:

Is it really a problem? O A recent survey of 43,000 public and private high school students found that: O 59% of all students admitted cheating on a test at least one time in the past year. 34% admitted cheating more than once. O 33% admitted using the internet to plagiarize a writing assignment Source:

Is it really a problem? O In a separate survey of 24,000 high school students, researchers found that: O 58% admitted to some form of plagiarism O 95% admitted to some form of cheating Source: (accessed though plagiarism.org)

Why is it such a problem?

Why do students plagiarize? Because fear and chaos bring out the savage beast that lies within us all

Why do students plagiarize? Stress

Why do students plagiarize? Procrastination

Why do students plagiarize? They don’t intend to, but they don’t understand plagiarism.

What are some common forms of plagiarism? O Cutting and pasting: submitting another’s work, word for word, as your own O Mixing your own writing with cut-and-pasted sections from another source O Changing key words and phrases, but retaining the essential content, order, and sentence structure of the original source

How can I avoid plagiarism? O Plan, prepare, don’t procrastinate O Don’t bother with Sparknotes, etc. O When in doubt, ask your teacher

What happens if I am caught plagiarizing? You have initiated the process of withdrawal from the community!
