Creating the Perfect Sandwich (WITH A COLLEGE BUDGET)

Learners The learners for this scenario would be Purdue students who wish to learn how to make a perfect sandwich within the confines of a student’s meager budget. *drawing of Purdue logo*

Objectives Given a limited budget, students will be able to create the perfect sandwich using the best ingredients with 100% accuracy. *drawing of delicious-looking sandwich*

Environment The environment will likely be a student’s dorm or apartment (the lesson would be accessed online). *drawing of laptop*

Orientation Text and Video Today, we will learn how to create an amazing sandwich with a limited budget. Have you every wanted to make a sandwich similar to what’s on the Food Network? Show video: Whether you want to make a special themed sandwich like the video or a simple classic, this lesson will teach you how to pick out the best ingredients for this sandwich (and save some money, too)!

Information Text and Audio The first step in making a perfect sandwich is to choose the best ingredients. The best ingredients are fresh! 1. Any vegetables that are used should be ripe. ◦Try vegetables from a local farmer’s market during the summer- these vegetables will be the freshest! 2. Ensure any condiments that are used are not expired. 3. Bread should not be stale. ◦Try bread from the bakery section of the grocery store, an actual bakery, or even homemade bread! 4. Any meat used should be fresh. ◦Try meat from the deli section of the grocery store- or buy raw meat and cook it how you like it!

Application Visuals and Text Choose the best picture for each ingredient: Lettuce: 1. *picture of a wilted head of lettuce* 2. *fresh lettuce, compact leaves* Tomato: 1. *red, ripe tomato* 2. *bruised tomato*

Information Text and Audio On a limited budget, the best ingredients may appear difficult to obtain since they can be expensive. However, there is a simple way to buy these ingredients without breaking the bank: look for sales! As students, there are often special deals. There are advertisements in the paper that show local store deals every week- these should be utilized to plan shopping trips. If you cannot travel to the store, pay special attention to the advertisements within walking distance.

Application Text, Audio, Visuals Try it out! This is a link to the weekly specials for Fresh City Market, a store close to campus: Check out the weekly deals on this cite. Are there any ingredients on sale? Check out the local newspaper for even more weekly advertisements- this allows you to compare prices from store to store.

Information Text and Audio Additional tips: Other ways to save money include the use of manufacturer’s or store coupons and in-store saving cards. Check online or in newspapers for coupons. Be open to trying new ingredients for your sandwich! You may discover a new perfect combination- like the Thanksgiving sandwich in the video.

Evaluation Text and Audio Test yourself by utilizing the tips in this lesson to create your own perfect sandwich! Plan which ingredients to buy and from where to get the best prices, and try new combinations! If your sandwich isn’t perfect the first time, try again! The perfect sandwich is different for everyone- keep trying new ingredients until you find the perfect recipe for you.
