The Manifest Destiny was the 19 th century belief that the United States was destined to expand from the Atlantic seaboard to the Pacific Ocean.

This is an 1872 painting by John Gast. What idea does it express?

The Louisiana Purchase was the beginning of the idea of the Manifest Destiny. Once that land was acquired and explored, the idea that all of the land from the Atlantic Ocean to the Pacific Ocean should be ours was developed.
