HPV Workgroup Projects Measures Review Cognitive Testing of Survey Items Survey of Latino Parents Policy Analysis

Purpose: To conduct a systematic review of measures used in study of HPV vaccine acceptability Established: November 2007 Chair: Jennifer Allen (Boston) HPV Measures Review Group Gloria Coronado Cam Escoffery Rebecca Williams Reagan Tuff Maria Fernandez Patricia Dolan Mullen Beth Glenn Jennifer Allen

HPV Measures Review Group Products Completed: Submitted manuscript co-authored by participating CPCRN sites and CDC: Allen JD, Coronado GD, Williams RS, Glenn B, Escoffery C, Fernandez M, Tuff R, Wilson KM, Mullen PD (2009). A Systematic Review of Measures Used in Studies to Assess Acceptability of the Human Papillomavirus (HPV) Vaccine. Under Review. Presentation at American Society of Preventive Oncology: Allen JD, Fernandez ME, Krueter M, Kahn JA. Integrating clinical, community and policy perspectives on the HPV vaccine. American Society for Preventive Oncology. Annual Meeting. Bethesda, MD, March 16, Inventory of HPV survey items from CPCRN network centers (available on CPCRN website)

HPV Cognitive Testing Group Purpose: To produce a set of cognitively tested survey items that can be used in future research of HPV vaccination behavior Established: October 2008 Chair: Noel Brewer (North Carolina) Participants: Noel Brewer Alice Richman Kurt Ribisl Rebecca Williams Jennifer Allen Lauren Arnold Lori Garibay Debbie Pfeiffer Vetta Sanders-Thompson Vicky Taylor Jocelyn Talbot Gloria Coronado Maria Fernandez Jasmin Tiro Beth Glenn Roshan Bastani Jennifer Tsui NCI: Sarah Kobrin CDC: Katherine Wilson

HPV Cognitive Testing Group Identified 20 survey items to cognitively test among parents of vaccine eligible daughters (ages 9-17 years) from a candidate list of 114 items in the literature or used in ongoing research. All cognitive testing was conducted in English. Each CPCRN site identified two target racial/ethnic groups for cognitive testing:  African Americans (UNC, UCLA, WU)  Latino (UT, UW, Harvard)  White (UNC, UT, UW, WU)  Other: Asians (UCLA), Haitians (Harvard) Examples of constructs:  Awareness of where to go for more HPV information  Discussion of vaccine with health care provider  Readiness for decision-making  Influence of HPV vaccine ads  Social norms/influences  Perceived side effects of vaccine  Barriers to receiving vaccine

HPV Cognitive Testing Group Products Completed: Cognitive testing of 20 survey items for parents of vaccine eligible daughters (n=5-10 participants/site) Total N=62 parents Analysis of findings from participating centers Products Continuing: Cross-center manuscript to be submitted to the journal of Sexually Transmitted Infections

Purpose: Assess HPV vaccine behavior, attitudes, and barriers among Latino parents of vaccine eligible girls (9-17 yrs); compare across different groups & geographic regions; inform intervention development and implementation Established: October 2008 Chair: Roshan Bastani (Los Angeles) Participating Sites: HPV Latino Survey Group Roshan Bastani Beth Glenn Ritesh Mistry Jennifer Tsui Vicky Taylor Gloria Coronado Maria Fernandez Sally W. Vernon Soledad Liliana Escobar-Chaves UNC Coordinating Center: Rebecca Williams CDC: Katherine Wilson

Identified constructs relevant to: HPV vaccination behavior and to guide intervention development Selected/Adapted 24 Core Questionnaire items:  majority from existing surveys at participating CPCRN sites, HPV Measures Group, and national surveys Cognitively Tested + Translated into Spanish Examples of constructs: HPV Latino Survey Group  Knowledge & awareness  Acceptability/intention to vaccinate  Perceived susceptibility to HPV  Perceived severity of HPV  Perceived efficacy of vaccine  Barriers to obtaining vaccine  Decision related factors  Social norms/influences  Self-efficacy  HPV vaccine uptake

HPV Latino Survey Group Products completed: Core HPV Survey administered in Spanish to parents of vaccine eligible girls (ages 9-17) at three sites Los Angeles (n=202) Telephone surveys of callers from county health hotline for low-income, uninsured women Houston (n=44) Face-to-face interviews of residents living the Lower Rio Grande Valley Telephone interviews of callers from United Way Gulf Coast 211 Helpline (just begun) Seattle (n=80) Face-to-face interviews of mothers residing in Yakima Valley of Eastern Washington

HPV Latino Survey Group Products Continuing: Continue data collection at all three sites  Los Angeles (n=300)  Houston (n= from 211)  Seattle (n=100) Cross-center manuscript to describe similarities and differences across regions

HPV Policy Analysis Group Purpose: To describe and compare state legislation on HPV vaccine and to identify correlates of policy activities Established: November 2008 Chair: Ritesh Mistry (Los Angeles) Participants: Vicky Taylor Ritesh Mistry Miriam Laugesen Roshan Bastani Theresa Byrd William Callo Noel Brewer Kurt Ribisl Rebecca S. Williams

HPV Policy Analysis Group Products Completed: Database of details about state legislative bills regarding HPV vaccination from January June 2008 Grant proposal to RWJ to continue and extend this work (not selected) Products Continuing: Manuscript in preparation: Laugesen M, Caramelli K, Mistry R, Needleman J, Taylor V, Bastani R. “All Over the Map: State Legislation on Human Papillomavirus Vaccine.” Manuscript at conceptual stage: Mistry R, Laugesen M, Ribisl K, et al. “State-level correlates of HPV Vaccine legislation.”
