 The focus was less on those who were tried and convicted of the death and more about the fallout of a case that shocked us all.  And while we were busy at the time turning on individuals, the case was far more complicated than most of us were led to believe.  Here was a child who, we were told, was failed by every agency he came into contact with.

 A child died in horrific circumstances but the programme highlighted the devastation caused to many by a ‘lynch mob’ public that did not have access to all the facts.  Was this ‘Trial by Media?’  The programme revealed that a great many agencies failed to protect Baby P – and that the social workers and child protection policies were just the tip of an ever growing iceberg that implicated significant shortcomings by the police and Ofsted among others.

 But we should not lose sight of the fact that an agency was not to blame for the death of Baby P.  The people who were are behind bars and rightly so.  The reality is that we have to accept shocking events like this will continue to happen even if we put into place preventative measures that will make them less likely.

 The statistics since Baby P’s death speak volumes: in the UK over 300 children have died at the hands of a parent and at least 30 of them were known to authorities. ( Do not quote these stats)

 Blake Fowler, 7, died after 'unacceptable errors in tackling abuse'  A boy died from a severe head injury after authorities failed to act for years while he suffered abuse, a serious case review has found.
