Second Congress The Business of Design and Engineering

COFES Theme Takeaways from Briefings and Roundtables

COFES Themes Vision and Strategy Technology Economy Innovation Complexity Risk Resilience 2020 Vision Daily Connection to Big Picture Co-Evolution

The Move to Co-Evolution WHAT we are designing has changed

The Move to Co-Evolution We need a new generation of tools that understand and support simultaneous symbiotic development of the physical, electronic, logical, and content aspects of our products: Tools that support co-evolution of design.

COFES 2016 Theme The Move to Co-Evolution The design of physical things has evolved greatly over many generations. From early origins of design by craftsmen and artisans, to carefully considered design and engineering on drafting boards, we have progressed today to building realistic and predictive models to explore with sophisticated software tools. But WHAT we are designing has changed. Much of the innovation and differentiation that drives product development today occurs in the domain of software and content. And that must influence the development of the physical and electronic design. We need a new generation of tools that understand and support simultaneous symbiotic development of the physical, electronic, logical, and content aspects of our products: Tools that support co-evolution of design. For the past 16 years, COFES has been that place on the calendar that we set aside to lift our heads from the daily grind and consider our work in a broader context. This year, COFES explores the nature of the tools we will need as we reimagine design in the context of the 21st century. We’ve created great tools for the design of physical products and electronics, and decent tools for the design of software. What we haven’t done is even conceive of the tools we need for co-evolution of complex things. That’s what we will explore at COFES 2016.

The Move to Co-Evolution How do we make that happen?

The Move to Co-Evolution Tools are only part of the issue. What else do we need to consider? Process? Culture? Different Pace and Processes?

The Move to Co-Evolution How do we focus on this and still innovate in other areas? What is the priority? New design techniques and production methods

The Move to Co-Evolution Is it realistic for all of this to come from one place? Integrated? Federated?

The Business of Design and Engineering COFES Theme Takeaways from Briefings and Roundtables

How far out should we set our horizons?

the best way to predict the future is to invent it

the best way to invent is to set the vision

the best way to set the vision is to tell a compelling story

Your challenge for 2016 Think about your business assumptions: What assumed constants are not constant anymore? What assumed constraints aren’t there anymore?

How has your thinking evolved in the past year?

Business Model - Cloud - Additive Manufacturing - Hardware Futures - Internet of Things - Robotics - Cognitive Computing - CAD - Reality Computing - Software Kernels - Systems Engineering - Feedback Loops - - CAM - Simulation Security - Autonomous Systems - Business Lifecycles - Public Benefit

Brad’s Takeaways Takeaways Similarity of Spaceflight and Construction Perfect Optimization of an activity has no impact without considering its context Carbon to Silicon to Carbon

Brad’s Takeaways Takeaways How do you act when the likely scenario has you out of business soon? The world is going to change regardless of our opinion. Attitudes Matter

Brad’s Takeaways Takeaways That 31%

What are your key takeaways?

Jim’s Takeaways Takeaways Pace of change is astonishing – will we be talking co-evolution with DNA at COFES 2020? Cloud evolution continues, smaller software companies can leverage IaaS

Jim’s Takeaways Takeaways IoT & IIoT are hot topics of conversation (with a lot of confusion) Business strategies need to address change and uncertainty – ours and our customers

What are you going to do about it?

Challenge for next COFES: Identify the top 3 issues that have the potential to disrupt your business Develop a contingent strategy for your business for each
