Progenitor of the Enlightenment Composed philosophical treatise that formed the basis of modern scientific method Logician, and pointed out false pathways down which human reason often strays Early proponent of state funding for scientific inquiry

Pure scientists in modern sense Relied on observation and testing Firm believer of the importance of data Also had no philosophical qualms regarding the reliability of the senses Completed in 1687 was Newton's Principia which was the foundation of the entire science of physics

Strong advocate for social reform of all kinds Invented autobiography as it is known today His work on social empowerment and democracy will remain influential long after his passing

Torchbearers of Enlightenment Employed dry wit sarcasm to entertain readers along with providing convincing arguments for reform Was the pen name of Francois-Marie Arouet

Wrote the English literature: Gulliver’s Travels Used Gulliver’s encounters as a metaphorical relation to 18 th century England Swift preferred the inviting trickery of the allegory He had a sense of humor in his work which many people admire him for

Pope was best known for his heroic couplets He blended his criticism into his poetry Dearly admired for his capable and effective translations of classic literature His greatest masterpiece was The Dunciad, a four part pessimistic view of the 18 th century English society

He was an author, printer, scientist, and salesman who introduced America to the Enlightenment Fought for and achieved religious freedom along with other founding fathers Attending Constitutional Conventions, helped give logical reasoning to the breaking away from Britain

Wanted to separate the colonies from Britain His plea for independence was written in a book: Common Sense in hope of gaining supporters

 The French Revolution marked the beginning of the end of the Age of Reason  Violence in France & a variety of other forms of chaos demonstrated that Enlightenment principles were not yet practical  Nonetheless the ideas of the era propelled science forward, broke American colonies from Britain, allowed citizens to have conversations about their nation and world events, & gave everyone then and now wonderful works of literature. The Enlightenment paved the way for the modern world
