Open and Honest Communication Who can I talk to about my Child’s Special Educational Needs? Every child at Adderley Children’s Centre has a key worker who will support your child and ensure their individual needs are met. You will have the opportunity to speak to your child's key worker daily. Yvonne Spoors and Nicky Hinchliff are the Special Educational Needs Coordinators (SENCos). They work with children, teachers, parents and various agencies to ensure that children with special educational needs have their needs met. What should I do if I have concerns about my Child? If you have any concerns please speak to your child’s key worker/ Class teacher or ask to speak to one of the SENCOs. What will happen if the Nursery have concerns about my child? We will speak to you directly and arrange a meeting with one of the SENCOs to discuss any concerns. What will happen next? How will the Nursery Identify and Assess my Child’s Special Educational needs? How will I know what support my Child is getting? We are here to help you and your child get the best provision to meet his/her needs. We will always be honest when sharing information with you and will endeavour to answer any questions you raise. We encourage you to talk to your child’s key worker on a daily basis and regularly speak to the SENCo about all aspects of your child’s well being and development. You will be invited to attend termly meetings with the SENCo and key worker to discuss your child’s progress and be involved in identifying and setting new targets. How will I know what Professionals are supporting my Child? Depending upon your child’s needs it may be necessary to get help from other professionals. No professional will become involved until it has been discussed with you and you have given permission. You will be invited to meet the professional/s and discuss your child’s needs with him/her/them. How will the school provide appropriate and effective teaching for my child? The nursery ensure that all children, including those with Special Educational or Medical needs access quality first teaching through a broad, balanced and flexible curriculum. If your child requires additional support then identified interventions are put in place. This may involve some 1:1 support form the SEND team/ small group activities or specialised targeted work with other professionals (e.g. speech therapist). Activities are differentiated according to your child’s level of development. The nursery uses a range of strategies including visual timetables, Makaton signs, symbols and other resources to help enhance the learning. How do I know the staff are able to meet my child’s special educational needs? The staff at Adderley Children’s Centre regularly receive training to support children with Special Educational needs. The SENCo is responsible for ensuring that training is up to date and appropriate. Annually the staff have allergy/ asthma/ febrile convulsions & Epilepsy training All staff have received Tier 2 – AET Autism Training All staff have received ELDP (Early Language development programme) training Some staff have completed level 3 – ELKAN training – for language development Each year specific training is arranged to meet the needs of individual children. Appropriate & Effective Teaching and Learning Appropriate & Effective Teaching and Learning Each year specific training is provided according to the current cohort of children.

What professionals may become involved with my Child? Depending upon your child’s specific needs the nursery may make a referral, with your permission for outside support. A Partnership Approach Come to your home to meet your child and find out all about his/ her needs. Ask for any information from a previous setting or agency Settle your child into nursery, taking into account his/ her needs Invite the new school’s SENCo and class Teacher to come into nursery to find out all about your child. We visit the new school and tell them what your child likes and what helps him/her learn Talk to your child about their new school and help them settle with the use of visits/ photos etc.
