NEURODEVELOPMENTAL DISORDERS CHAPTER 5
Presentation transcript:

 Down syndrome is a genetic disorder that includes a combination of birth defects, including some degree of mental retardation, characteristic facial features and, often, heart defects, visual and hearing impairment, and other health problems.  a baby is born with three #21 chromosomes, rather than the usual pair, the baby would be said to have "trisomy 21." Trisomy 21 is also known as Down syndrome  A child with Down syndrome may have eyes that slant upward and small ears that may fold over slightly at the top. Their mouth may be small, making the tongue appear large. Their nose also may be small, with a flattened nasal bridge. Some babies with Down syndrome have short necks and small hands with short fingers

 Autism is a complex developmental disability that typically appears during the first three years of life and affects a person’s ability to communicate and interact with others. Signs of Autism  Lack of or delay in spoken language  Repetitive use of language and/or motor mannerisms (e.g., hand-flapping, twirling objects)  Little or no eye contact  Lack of interest in peer relationships  Lack of spontaneous or make-believe play  Persistent fixation on parts of objects

 A learning disability is a neurological disorder that affects 1 or more of the basic psychological processes involved in understanding or in using spoken or written language  The disability may also manifest itself in an imperfect ability to listen, think, read, write, spell or to do mathematical calculations  At least 80% of students with learning disabilities encounter difficulties in reading.  More than 1 million children encounter reading problems during the first 3 years of schooling.  74% of children who were unsuccessful at reading in 3 rd grade are still unsuccessful in 9 th grade.  Dyslexia is a sever type of learning disability for many people
