PROGRAM PROPOSALS Academic Council May 3,

FCS Department Rename DSU requests the rename of the Department of Family and Consumer Sciences to be changed to the Department of Human Development and Family Studies. This name change will be more in alignment with similar departments at other institutions of higher education and will more appropriately represent the programs and courses offered in the department. 3

BS Bioinformatics The degree will train students in an exciting interdisciplinary field that mixes all STEM fields and will prepare students for graduate school or a career in the pharmaceutical, agricultural, public health, or biotechnology industries. Only four new courses are required. First full degree in the USHE system. BYU has degree. Dixie Regional Medical Center (part of Intermountain Healthcare) enthusiastically supports this program as they are looking for more qualified individuals to help with their new genomic oncology program. 4

Applied Leadership Emphasis in Communication Studies The interdisciplinary curriculum will give students practical leadership skills in effective communication, team building, shared governance, self-direction, and mentorship. Only one new course is needed. First emphasis of its kind in the USHE system. 5

Discontinue of Surgical Technology Certificate AAS Degree in Surgical Technology is currently with BOR & NWCCU for final approval Degree will enable the recruitment of degree-seeking students, remain competitive with other programs in the region, and meet the projected CAAHEP accreditation minimum requirement for the degree. If approved, degree admittance will begin Fall 2016 It is anticipated that the certificate will be discontinued at the end of Spring 2016 when the last cohort of students admitted to the certificate program completes their certificate. Therefore, no teach-out is required. 6

Accounting Minor Many students have been requesting minors in Business related fields. Currently DSU has does not offer a minor in Accounting. Pairing an Accounting Minor with a student’s major of choice will provide substantial benefit to students’ employment opportunities after graduation. Additionally the minor provides analytical skills, critical thinking, and a business vocabulary that will be beneficial to students pursuing careers in business, consulting, banking, finance, law, social sciences, and government. The minor requires a minimum of 21 credits. 7
