 A new Curriculum programme has been implemented from Yr 1-6  The aim is to provide consistency in our approach across the school  Each Year Group is a learning journey and is a stepping stone to the next year  The curriculum provides challenge and opportunity for all children to achieve their full potential  Challenge is a focus for this term  The Framework identifies the end of year expectations for Year 4

 Mental Fluency and an ability to apply it to mathematical calculations is essential  Key Instant Recall of Facts (KIRFs) is an important part of Maths  Children count everyday during lessons at the expected level for their year group and across concepts  Year 4 are expected to become fluent in all time tables up to x12 by the end of the year  Children complete Going for Gold challenges x1 a week during Guided Maths sessions

All classes also have Guided Maths sessions, lasting approximately 20-30mins per day. These sessions consist of:  Problem Solving (Exploring the construct of a range of different problem types) x2 per week  Arithmetic- x 2 per week Arithmetic enables pupils to continue to practise methods and procedural fluency, while moving through other curriculum topics.  Going for Gold x1 a week

 The school has its own calculations policy for the four number operations (addition, subtraction, multiplication and division)  This is followed and implemented in each year group  The policy is designed to build on pupils’ learning as they move through the school, working towards an efficient method  A copy of the full policy and the condensed ‘at a glance version’ is available on the school website on the Maths page and year group page

 Times tables and counting – We try to make this as fun and interesting as possible, but for some they need to be practised regularly  Maths homework is given on a Tuesday and returned on a Friday. It is always linked to current class learning  Use the school’s calculations policy to support your child at home  Often, homework may be problem solving packs and/or Abacus games online. Please look after the games and all the parts while they are at home, the packs are expensive and damages or lost parts will need to be charged  It is important the children complete this homework, as problem solving is a key component of the Curriculum.

 English sessions consist of: - Reading (SPIQe) - Writing - GPS (Grammar, punctuation and taught spelling) - Clued spelling  English homework will be given out on Wednesday and due back on Monday

Children have daily reading sessions which follow the following process: S ummarise and sequence P redict I nvestigate Q uestion e yes

 Children must read at home daily and we encourage questioning (which can be found at the back of reading records)  Children have an option of reading: - Library books - School reading books - Books of their choice - Newspapers/Magazines  Once children have reached their destination, they will receive a prize. These can include stickers, pencils, bookmarks, badges, homework pass, iPad reading game and choose a book of your choice, golden time choice

 Clued spellings in class  Taught spelling following the Nelson scheme  Year 3 and 4 word list  Non-negotiable words

 A child centred process of learning spellings  Ability appropriate word lists are used  Children are paired in mixed abilities and support each other through the process  Children will also have words added to their clued spelling boxes from their class work and taught spellings

 Grammar, punctuation and spelling  A different focus each week and homework will often be related to this

 This term our theme is Any Town Estate Agents where we will be learning about the Romans, the Vikings and the Anglo-Saxons  The second term we will be learning all about the Ancient Egyptians  Finally, in the last term we will be learning all about the Animal Kingdom

 Children are assessed formally x3 a year in Maths  Teacher assessments are carried out regularly against the year group frameworks
