Opening Routine 1.An online bookstore sells both print books and e- books (books in an electronic format). Customers can pay with either a gift card or a credit card. a)Suppose that the probability of the event “print book is purchased” is 0.6 and that the probability of the event “customer pays using gift card” is 0.2. If these two events are independent, what is the probability that a randomly selected book purchase is a print book paid for using a gift card? b)Suppose that the probability of the event “e-book is purchased” is 0.4; the probability of the event “customer pays using gift card” is 0.2; and the probability of the event “e-book is purchased and customer pays using a gift card” is 0.1. Are the two events “e-book is purchased” and “customer pays using a gift card” independent? Explain why or why not.

Topic 1 – Probability Class 5 – Two-Way Frequency Tables Mr. Solórzano – Algebra 2

Standards MAFS.912.S-CP.1.4Construct and interpret two-way frequency tables of data when two categories are associated with each object being classified. Use the two-way table as a sample space to decide if events are independent and to approximate conditional probabilities. For example, collect data from a random sample of students in your school on their favorite subject among math, science, and English. Estimate the probability that a randomly selected student from your school will favor science given that the student is in tenth grade. Do the same for other subjects and compare the results.

Objectives Construct and interpret two-way frequency tables. Use two-way frequency tables to find conditional probabilities.

The table below shows the number of days that a meteorologist predicted it would be sunny, and the number of days it was sunny. Based on the data in the table, what is the conditional probability that it will be sunny on a day when the meteorologist predicts it will be sunny? The table shows the distribution of the labor force in the United States in the year Suppose that a worker is selected at random. Find the probability that a female works in the Industry field. Express your answer as a decimal, and round to the nearest thousandth.
