“Learning Communities have high expectations for all students and staff” (LUSD Strategic Design Beliefs/Guiding Principles about Learning Communities, #3)

The district discourages activities which counteract the educational program. Therefore, articles of clothing worn by students while at school should not promote principles, products or symbols which are in opposition to the district’s stated educational philosophy. Specifically, students should not wear any article of clothing that promotes or advertises alcohol, tobacco, or other drugs, gang affiliations or is disruptive to the educational environment. Remember, learning is your current profession; dress professionally!

The following guidelines shall apply to regular school activities. 1. Shoes must be worn at all times. Elementary (K-8) students must wear shoes that are safe easily stay on feet (such as shoes with back strips).

2. Clothing & Jewelry shall be free of writing, pictures or any other insignia which are crude, vulgar, profane or sexually suggestive, or which advocate racial, ethnic or religious prejudice or the use of drugs or alcohol.

Hat, caps and other head coverings shall not be worn indoors during school hours.

Hats may be worn outside and solely for the purpose of sun protection. Hats shall be made of pliable material with a 3-5 inch brim around the entire circumference of the hat. They may not sport an insignia, other than the school insignia. Hats by nature of the color, arrangements, trademark or any other attribute that denote membership in gangs, or which advocate racial, ethic or religious prejudice, drug use violence, intimidation or disruptive behavior are prohibited.

Gym shorts may not be worn in classes other than physical education.

Leggings may not be worn unless covered by shorts, skirts, or dresses that meet appropriate dress code.

4. Clothes shall be sufficient to conceal undergarments.

5. Shirts or blouses shall have a shoulder strap that is a minimum of ¾ inch in width. See-through or fish- net fabrics, halter top, off-the-shoulder or low-cut tops, bare midriffs are prohibited.

Shorts need to have a minimum 3” inseam* to be acceptable, and skirts need to meet the mid-thigh mark. *An inseam is measured from the center inside seam down the leg of the garment.

Hair shall be clean and neatly groomed. Hair may not be sprayed by any coloring that would drip when wet. Any colored or dyed hair must be of a “natural” color.

At the discretion of the principal or designee, hats signifying membership (verified by roster and eligibility list) in a school sponsored, Board approved organization (club athletic team, etc.) may be worn. Lindsay Unified School District
