Before conducting a flight with a trainee, the instructor should carry out a pre-flight brief There are 5 elements to a pre-flight brief: –Aim –Airmanship –Exercise brief –Sortie brief –Check of understanding The pre-flight brief is not a lecture It should last no more than minutes It is sometimes easier to emphasize teaching points using other teaching aids such as aircraft models or cockpit layouts. Introduction

Use of a whiteboard is optional If using a whiteboard: –Use colour (Check all pens are serviceable before starting) –Use diagrams from FTP124 –Ensure the whole brief remains on the board, do not erase teaching points –Use BLOCK CAPITALS to avoid illegible handwriting –Don’t stand in one place when writing – this will cause the text to slope across the board –Avoid using acronyms –Keep eye contact with the trainee when talking, don’t talk to the whiteboard Regular practice of carrying out a pre-flight brief using a whiteboard will help with your development as an instructor. Introduction

Aim If using a whiteboard, write the exercise number and name at the top of the board. Also write your name in the top corner of the board before starting State the aim of the exercise for the trainee from the appropriate FTP 3225 GS Exercise 4 – Effects of controls 1 Aim – To select the datum attitude using co-ordinated controls J Bloggs
