What is the Family Engagement Network? Riverside County Office of Education (RCOE) offers countywide participants regularly scheduled opportunities to expand their knowledge of effective family engagement strategies, obtain free or low-cost parent resources, and share ideas with others actively working in the area of family engagement.

Parent Involvement Parent Engagement Parent Involvement or Parent Engagement To create the kinds of school-family partnerships that raise student achievement, improve local communities, and increase public support, we need to understand the difference between family involvement and family engagement. One of the dictionary definitions of involve is "to enfold or envelope," whereas one of the meanings of engage is "to come together and interlock." Thus, involvement implies doing to; in contrast, engagement implies doing with.

Priority 1: Basic Services Providing all students with access to fully credentialed teachers in their subject areas, as well as instructional materials that align with State Standards, and safe, properly maintained school facilities. (CAPTA) Key questions: Is instruction provided by qualified, credentialed teachers in all subject areas? Do our students use textbooks and relevant materials aligned to current state standards? Are school facilities in working order? How are we improving or increasing services for foster youth, low-income youth and English Language Learner students in the area of basic school services?

Priority 1: Basic Services Discuss: What might we see in our LCAP to address “basic services”? What are some parent engagement actions that could support “basic services”? In 5 minutes, be prepared to share one idea with the whole group!

Priority 2: Implementation of State Standards Implementation of State Standards includes CA English Language Arts and Math standards, Next Generation Science Standards, and English Language Development Standards along with other content standards. New learning standards help students develop critical thinking skills and prepare them to be civically engaged and college- and career-ready. (CAPTA) Key questions: How have our teachers and support staff received professional development in the new CA State Standards and how to effectively apply them in the classroom? How can different areas of study be integrated to enhance learning? How can we ensure that all students have access to state standards academic content? What outreach efforts do we use so that all parents are aware of the new state standards and assessments?

Discuss: What might we see in our LCAP to address “implementation of state standards”? What are some parent engagement actions that could support “implementation of state standards”? In 5 minutes, be prepared to share one idea with the whole group! Priority 2: Implementation of State Standards

Priority 3: Parent Involvement Parent involvement means efforts by the school district and schools to seek input from all parents, and to engage parents as partners in decision-making. (CAPTA) Key questions: Do families feel welcomed, valued and connected to each other and the school in our community? Are parents, staff and our community partners working together to support student success at home and at school? Is it easy for parents, School Site Councils, and other committees to communicate and work with school and district administrators and staff? How do we promote and grow parent involvement? How can parents learn more and ask questions about district programs, policies and activities?

Priority 4: Pupil Achievement Student achievement means improving outcomes for all students to ensure student success. (CAPTA) How do we measure success (metrics)?: Performance on CAASPP (ELA/Math) English Learner (EL) progress toward English proficiency EL reclassification rate % of students completing a-g requirements (high school) % of students completing CTE sequences (high school) Advanced Placement (AP) score of 3 or higher (high school) % of students demonstrating collect preparedness (Early Assessment Program, Grade 11 CAASPP).

When school members feel safe, valued, cared for, respected, and engaged, learning increases. Priority 7: Course Access Course access means a broad course of study in required subject areas is offered for all students. (CAPTA) Key Questions: What classes are currently being offered to our students? How well are students across all student groups doing in general and in the core academic subjects? How will we know if the school district is meeting the goal of all students taking a full range of courses? What strategies do we have in place to inform and engage parents in course selection, career pathways and college planning for their student?

Priority 8: Other Pupil Outcomes Other student outcomes mean measurements of student performance in other required areas of study. (CAPTA) Key Questions: How well are our students across all student groups doing on college entrance exams such as the SAT or ACT? What multiple measures are used to assess and improve student outcomes? How can our student outcomes be improved? How can services for low-income students, English Language Learners and foster youth be improved and increased to enhance their performance outcomes in these study areas? How can stronger family-school partnerships support student success in these areas?
