Why Digital Citizenship Was a Priority Other successful 1:1 districts stressed the importance of emphasizing it Our teachers were very concerned about the impact of having untrained students with devices in their classrooms Educate students about digital tools and the appropriate and academically honest ways to use them Prepare students for expectations for college and career Protect the investment the district is making in the devices (and therefore in the students)

Starting Point The Nine Elements of Digital Citizenship article by Mike Ribble Article defines citizenship very broadly MCS wanted students to master certain competencies regarding these elements and broke them down into 3 subcategories: Tech skills (how to send an , drag and drop, use computer hardware components, etc.) Digital Literacy (rating website reliability, writing good s, gathering information successfully online) Digital Citizenship (think being nice to others, maintaining appropriate online behavior)

Some pieces fall in multiple categories Plagiarism, copyright, online security, digital footprint (digital citizenship or literacy) There were several key topics that both programs heavily emphasize, and we felt like a double dose of training in those areas was a good thing.

Multiple tools for multiple needs K-12 Common Sense Media (free) for digital citizenship and digital literacy needs K-7 Learning.com (paid service) for digital literacy and tech skills Common Sense Media and learning.com curricula and lesson plans were very well-defined and made it easy to vertically and horizontally align curricula and made it easy for teachers to use to teach face-to- face digital skills lessons What to teach and what year to teach it is non-negotiable districtwide. How individual schools incorporate this instruction into their school year is a site-based decision

We have heard nothing but positive things about both Common Sense Media and learning.com and how students interact with them Kindergarten students able to do drag and drop and learning and using that technical vocabulary And now, I will toss it back to Ann for the next segment
