Chapter 10 NUTRITION GUIDELINES

Dietary Guidelines for Americans Offer sound advice on nutrition and fitness Updated in 2005 – they are the basis for federal nutrition policies and programs

My Pyramid… In 2005, the USDA replaced the old Food Guide Pyramid with MyPyramid MyPyramid tailors food needs for each individual person

Food Groups… Fruit Group – RED Choose a variety of fruits – whether fresh, frozen, canned or dried

Vegetable Group - GREEN Eat a variety of veggies – but dark green vegetables and orange are the best!

Grain Group - ORANGE Half of the grains you eat in a day should be whole grains!

Meat & Beans Group - PURPLE Chose lean protein foods and include more fish, beans, nuts and seeds than meats and poultry

Milk Group - BLUE Needed for calcium – choose low fat or fat free milk!

Oils - YELLOW Use limited amounts and choose liquid rather than solid

Nutrient Density… The relationship between nutrients and calories in a food High-dense food = apple Low-dense food = candy bar
