When you say the word “salt” what are you referring to? Road Salt Table Salt Rock Salt Sea Salt Names are important. They help us differentiate between different objects and ourselves!

NAMES AND FORMULAS ALL ionic compounds are composed of POSITIVE IONS and NEGATIVE IONS! Ionic compounds can be identified by their CHEMICAL NAMES or CHEMICAL FORMULAS!

THE CHEMICAL NAME Made up of 2 parts  1 for each ion involved Ex. Table salt is SODIUM CHLORIDE The first part names the positive ion (sodium) the positive ion is always a metal in a compound containing 2 elements the second part names the negative ion (chlorine) The negative ion is always a non-metal in a compound containing 2 elements The non-metal ion’s name ALWAYS ends with the suffix “ide”

THE CHEMICAL FORMULA Chemical Formulas... contain symbols to identify each ion in an ionic compound show the relative # of ions in a compound Indicated by a subscript REMEMBER: You can find the ion charges of an element by looking at the Periodic Table

Writing the Names of Ionic Compounds REMEMBER: The metal is listed first, followed by the non-metal! REMEMBER: In an ionic compound, the positive charges balance the negative charges. This balance of charge is used to determine the smallest whole number ratio of positive to negative ions.

STEPS EXAMPLES CaI ₂ Na ₃ P 1. Name the metal ion Calcium  Ca²+Sodium  Na+ 2. Name the non- metal ion, then change the ending to the suffix “ide” I-  Iodine  Iodide P³-  Phosphorus  Phosphide 3. Write the name of the compound Calcium IodideSodium Phosphide

You try! K ₂S Ag₃N CaI₂

Writing the Formulas of Ionic Compounds REMEMBER... The positive charges MUST balance the negative charges! Use the balance to find the ratio of positive ions to negative ions! Use the ratio to write the subscripts in the formula! IMPORTANT! The final formula must represent the SMALLEST WHOLE RATIO! In other words, write in lowest terms (simplify)!

You try! Li+ with Cl- Al³+ with O²- Silver Sulphide
