Natural Resources A natural resource is something that is found in nature and can be used by people. Earth's natural resources include light, air, water, plants, animals, soil, stone, minerals, and fossil fuels. People need some natural resources to stay alive. They use others to make their lives better. Every place on Earth has its own unique group of natural resources.
Natural Resources Washington's abundant natural resources have long fueled its economy. Its forests, fields, and fisheries provide numerous products.
Because of its major sea ports, network of airports and railways, Washington State is one of the leaders in the area of interstate trade.
Due to it’s equidistant proximity between Asia and Europe, it’s no wonder Washington State is also a leader in foreign trade.
Foreign trade is an important part of the state's economy. Trade with Asia is especially significant. Seattle and Tacoma are modern container ports. Huge ships carrying hundreds of semitrailer-sized containers sail into and out of Puget Sound daily.
Washington is the nation's leading producer of apples. Most of the red raspberries grown in the United States also come from Washington.

Daffodils and tulips from western Washington's fertile valleys are flown to florists throughout the United States and the world.
Washington State is one of the world's leading lumber producers. Forestland covers almost half the state, and nearly 21 million acres are used for commercial timber. Washington produces high-quality wood products and is home to major paper companies, all of which makes forestry an important part of the state's economy.
