Natural Resources A natural resource is something that is found in nature and can be used by people. Earth's natural resources include light, air, water, plants, animals, soil, stone, minerals, and fossil fuels. People need some natural resources to stay alive. They use others to make their lives better. Every place on Earth has its own unique group of natural resources.

Natural Resources Washington's abundant natural resources have long fueled its economy. Its forests, fields, and fisheries provide numerous products.

Because of its major sea ports, network of airports and railways, Washington State is one of the leaders in the area of interstate trade.

Due to it’s equidistant proximity between Asia and Europe, it’s no wonder Washington State is also a leader in foreign trade.

Foreign trade is an important part of the state's economy. Trade with Asia is especially significant. Seattle and Tacoma are modern container ports. Huge ships carrying hundreds of semitrailer-sized containers sail into and out of Puget Sound daily.

Washington is the nation's leading producer of apples. Most of the red raspberries grown in the United States also come from Washington.

Washington is also a leading producer of… hops spearmint oil dry peas lentils sweet cherries pears asparagus

Daffodils and tulips from western Washington's fertile valleys are flown to florists throughout the United States and the world.

Washington State is one of the world's leading lumber producers. Forestland covers almost half the state, and nearly 21 million acres are used for commercial timber. Washington produces high-quality wood products and is home to major paper companies, all of which makes forestry an important part of the state's economy.

In western Washington, fishing is an important industry. The state is famous for its abundance of fish, including: sockeye, chinook chum, coho, and pink salmon clams crab flounder halibut herring oysters shrimp Steelhead tuna

Why do you think fishing is an important industry in Washington state? Use evidence from the map to support your answer.

Manufacturing Transportation equipment is Washington's most valuable manufactured product. The state is a leading producer in the aircraft and space industry.

What information can you gather from the graphic?

Tourism Tourism has become a rapidly growing segment of the state economy. Beginning with the 1962 Seattle World's Fair, the impact of tourist spending continues to grow in importance.

Tourist Attractions With over 10 million visitors a year, Seattle Center (and the Space Needle) is Washington's number 1 tourist attraction.
