Why is the Amazon Rainforest being destroyed?

Today we are learning to…. Describe and analyse the causes of deforestation and the impacts it has on the environment.

Listening mat activity Listen carefully to the following video and circle the concepts that you hear. At the end of the video:- -underline the words that you don’t understand. -Tick the words/phrases that are causes of deforestation -Cross the words phrases that are impacts of deforestation.

Legal/illegal Deforestation is 53% agricultural Deforestation is 19% urban development Deforestation is 10% hydro- electric Deforestation is 10% road construction Deforestation is for livestock grazing Deforestation is for commercial logging Slash and burn Indigenous tribes Home to 50% of global plant and animal species Provides 20% of the worlds oxygen At least 20% of the Amazon has been destroyed Deforestation releases 8.7 tonnes of carbon dioxide into the atmosphere Decreasing endemic species due to lack of food and habitats Increasing soil erosion Lack of tree roots leads to flooding Increased greenhouse effect Listening mat Destruction of the rainforest.

What have you found out? Group talk Use the listening mat to… Tick the statements that describe a cause of deforestation/statistic about deforestation Put a cross against the statements that explain a consequence of deforestation.

Take one post it note each. On one side describe a cause of deforestation in the Amazon On the other side describe its impact on the environment. Post your note on the board Describe and explain the environmental impacts of deforestation (8 marks)

Success Criteria:-  Starter sentence to describe what deforestation is……. Deforestation is………  Now write a paragraph describing a cause of deforestation and explaining the impact it has on the environment-complete 3 causes using this structure A cause of deforestation is …………………This impacts on the environment because…..  Finally come to a conclusion using facts, figures that show the negative impacts of deforestation I feel that………. Describe and explain the environmental impacts of deforestation (8 marks) Yr9 Assessment-Rainforest Destruction

9YG1 Verbal feedback points VF1=What is the impact? Make the link… VF2=What is the question? VF3=Link the cause and the impact VF4=Describe the cause- how does it cause deforestation? VF5=Add one more cause and impact. Challenge Qu. A How can we make deforestation more sustainable

9YG2 Verbal feedback points VF1=Link the cause and impact (because of this… this happens….) VF2=Add in one more impact VF3=Name and locate the case study VF4=Describe the cause in more detail-what are they logging for etc VF5=Explain the impacts Challenge Qu. A How can we make deforestation more sustainable General points to check:- -Spellings of key words-correct x3 -Capital letters for locations-correct x3 -Paragraphs-//where there should be a new paragraph Green pen improvements……
