A Captain is a person chosen to represent and lead a team. It is an honor and responsibility which is special and should not be taken lightly. As a captain, you are following in the footsteps of a very select group of people.

Responsibilities of a Captain... Plan and coordinate team purchases (T-shirts, shorts, etc…) Plan and coordinate team socials... Plan and coordinate “Parents’ Night”… Plan and coordinate the banquet… Act as a go-between for coach and athlete (s)…. Be a leader not a follower; know when and where to get help and assistance…

Responsibilities of a Captain... Be dedicated to excellence; set a good example… Keep TEAM spirit up… Assist younger team members to fit in; run team meetings… Involve the team in solving problems… Promote school pride; give 100%; Listen… Set personal and team goals; reinforce team rules; show proper SPORTSMANSHIP!!!

Qualities of a Captain... Be a positive role model; be honest; be a positive morale booster and motivator… Be humble; be concerned about team members’ problems; be committed to the team and school… Be goal-oriented; be genuine - not two-faced… Be patient; have a positive attitude; communicate with others… Show good sportsmanship; self-confident; respect for others…

Qualities of a Captain... Creates the ability to have fun… Commands respect from others… Supports other sports… Respected by teammates and teachers!!!

Potential Problems For a Team!! Absence from Practice; Tardiness to practice… Lack of commitment from player (s); Violation of training rules… Rumor of chemical use by team member (s); Athlete (s) receiving failing or near failing grades; Supports other sports… Lack of support for one another; Discouraged athletes… Negative talk about coaches; Discouraged about losing!!

Potential Actions to be Taken by a Captain Talk to coach confidentially; Talk to individual player… Talk to team without coach present; talk to team with coach present… Talk to team members involved in problems, as a group; Lead by example… Look for honest compliments you can give each player; Go to activities as a team and sit together… Have team social activities after games; Discourage put downs!!!

This Presentation is a tool to help the Student/Athlete and Parent open lines of communications with the coaching staff. If all three parties are to be positive and honest with one another, these procedures must be followed. Step 1 The initial question should always be dealt with by the student/athlete and the coach. If the student/athlete is concerned about going to the coach, he/she should talk with the team captain. Step 2If the athlete is still not satisfied, he/she should speak with the coach for a more direct response. (Both sides should communicate openly.)

Step 3 If there are still questions that need to be answered, both the athlete and parent should talk directly with the coach. (All three sides should communicate openly.) Step 4If agreement has not taken place at this point, then a meeting with all stakeholders and Activities Director should take place. Parents: Remember – if your student/athlete has any questions about playing time – it is HIS/HER responsibility to talk to the Coach, not yours! Our Goal:It is our Goal to make sure that every athlete knows his/her importance to the team. If more clarity needs to take place, the COACH is the answer person, not the Activities Director.
