Presentation transcript:

Suppose I had a protractor and I wanted to determine the uncertainty of a measurement I made with it. If I measured an angle to be 30 degrees and noticed that the smallest unit of measurement on the protractor was 1 degree, what would the uncertainty of my measured value be?

 Because the smallest measurement possible on the protractor is 1 degree, the uncertainty of the protractor would be ± 1 o.  I can also say that the uncertainty can be given as half the smallest measurement, which would be given as ± 0.5 o.  For this lesson I will say that the uncertainty is ± 1 o.  If I want to represent the estimated and percent uncertainty, how would I do so?

The estimated uncertainty puts the uncertainty in context, and would be given by the following: Here we can see that the angle falls somewhere between 29 and 31 degrees. To represent the percent uncertainty, we can use the following equation. This means that the measurement is approximately 3 percent inaccruate.
