Multilateral Aid Multilateral Aid is…. Aid that is given to international agencies (such as World Bank) to distribute. Multilateral means ‘many sides’

The World Bank This institution was set up after WW2 by Western governments. Although al countries can join US economic interests dominate its policy. It makes loans to member states at interest rates below those of commercial banks in order to finance infrastructure development projects, such as power plants, hydroelectric dams and roads. It is also the worlds funding source for agricultural development.

Multilateral Aid involves the UK donating capital to other agencies such as : The international Monetary fund (IMF) The European Union – The UK along with other member states, contributes to a European aid fund which allocates grants rather than loans to developing countries. The United Nations - a small proportion of the UK’s aid budget is allocated to UN agencies such as UNICEF

Examples UNICEF is an initiative in the Philippines to improve education and health outcomes for the people of Mountain Province. Multilateral agencies and programmes provide an effective mechanism by which countries such as New Zealand can address poverty, conflict, governance issues, and humanitarian crises worldwide.

Some issues in development are best addressed at a global level, such as the establishment and monitoring of international norms and standards (such as the maintenance of human rights, and the protection of refugees) and the provision of global public goods (for example the reduction of greenhouse gases). With this goal in mind, New Zealand works in partnership with other donors and organisations such as the United Nations, the Commonwealth, international financial institutions, and international voluntary agencies.

By engaging with multilateral agencies and institutions aid companies are able to extend its outreach and impact globally, and to have its voice heard in global for a where international good practice is established and agreed in the areas of international development, human rights and international financing for development.

Some development issues can only be addressed meaningfully at an international level, especially the provision of global public goods (e.g. reducing greenhouse gases), and the establishment and monitoring of international norms and standards (e.g. in the area of human rights, and the rights of refugees and internally displaced persons). Multilateralism also offers a higher degree of impartiality than bilateral efforts, especially in addressing sensitive issues. Multilateralism and a global response

Basically… Multilateral Aid is a long term aid plan which helps countries to become secure and continue onto sustainable development. This help comes from the World Bank, who distribute money to the countries which need it most.
