WEAP + Training Workshop: An Overview Netherlands Climate Assistance Program Bill Dougherty, SEI-Boston 9-13 May 2005 Akosomba, Ghana

Overall Goal of NCAP Bilateral assistance programme to address adaptation to climate change Adaptation issues considered in wider context of poverty alleviation, vulnerable systems, and policy development Ensure stakeholder engagement, identification of adaptation initiatives and consensus-based recommendations for adaptation activities

Purpose of WEAP + Training Program Equip participants with the analytical tools and methods for conducting integrated assessments of water-related vulnerability and adaptation options

Major Objectives of WEAP + Training Program Provide training in the use of analytical tools for water resource planning Address links between water catchment planning, vulnerability assessment, and participatory approaches Provide practical guidance for country- specific water assessment activities

Key Training Themes of WEAP + Workshop Stakeholder engagement Vulnerability assessment (current, future) Water modeling (WEAP) Multi-criteria analysis (MCA-WEAP) Workplan development (or refinement)

Stakeholder Engagement Develop stakeholder action plan (SAP) Ensure linkages between the SAP and water resource management Promote understanding of vulnerability from stakeholder perspectives Develop participatory scenarios (for WEAP and MCA-WEAP)

Vulnerability Assessment Provide understanding of how to obtain vulnerability information from stakeholder setting Develop expertise on conducting vulnerability assessment (current and future)

Water Modeling Using WEAP Promote working knowledge of WEAP Establish technical expertise with WEAP Design WEAP scenarios that address vulnerability and stakeholder concerns

Adaptation Initiatives Using MCA- WEAP Provide a technical understanding of multi-criteria analysis (MCA) Embed MCA with vulnerability and stakeholder engagement Link WEAP with MCA-WEAP Establish technical expertise with MCA-WEAP
