Introduction to the Gospels Selected Scriptures This will be an effort to present a full picture of the life of Jesus from all four gospel accounts Luke is the most chronological gospel, and so will be used as the base outline

Matthew Author The Apostle Matthew - not questioned until the mid-1800's 1)The two (or four) source theory does not solve the “synoptic problem” 2)Authorship by Matthew traces back to early manuscripts and apostolic fathers (2nd - 4th centuries)

Matthew Author 3)Matthew’s gospel was used by early church fathers ( A.D.), so it is not of a late date 4)An eyewitness would not rely on someone who was not there to tell what he had experienced himself Jesus called Matthew (A.K.A. Levi) the tax- collector to follow Him (Matt. 9:9, Mk. 2:14 & Lk. 5:27-28)

Matthew Time of Writing Before 70 A.D. and after 50 A.D. Eusibius and other early church father say that Matthew was the first to write - closer to 50 A.D.

Matthew Audience Matthew is writing to a Jewish audience for he does not explain Jewish customs

Matthew Theme Matthew documents Jesus as the promised Messiah and presents His kingdom program Matthew 1-4: Introduction to the King  fulfilled prophecies in lineage, birth, herald.  Confirmed by God

Matthew Theme Matt. 5-7: Sermon on the Mount - the nature of Jesus’ kingdom and requirement to enter it Matt. 8-10: The Messiah’s credentials proven in miracles and calling disciples Matt : Rising opposition to the Messiah –  Jesus begins to speak in parables

Matthew Theme Matthew 16-20: Cultivation of the Messiah’s Disciples - Jesus prepares His disciples for what will come Matthew 21-25: The Messiah’s Presentation - Triumphal entry, teaching in Temple, refuting the Jews

Matthew Theme Matthew 26-27: Rejection of the Messiah - Last Supper, betrayal, arrest, trials, crucifixion Matthew 28: The Messiah’s Confirmation - The Resurrection and the commissioning of His disciples

Mark Author All early church traditions point to John Mark (Papias, Irenaeus, Clement, Origin, Jerome) Mark is from a wealthy family in Jerusalem (Acts 12:12) and the cousin of Barnabas (Col. 4:10)

Mark Author Mark went on missionary journeys with Barnabas - and later became useful to Paul - & also Peter Mark may have seen some of Jesus’ ministry - & may have been one of the 500 to see Jesus (1 Cor. 15)

Mark Time of Writing According to Irenaeus in Against Heresies  60's A.D.

Mark Audience He explains Jewish customs and Aramaic expressions  To Gentiles - probably Romans -

Mark Theme Mark 1:1- the gospel of Jesus Christ, the Son of God Mark 20:45 - Jesus came to serve and give His life a ransom for many

Mark Theme 1-2Presentation of the Servant 2-8Rising Opposition to the Servant 8-10Instructions from the Servant 11-15Rejection of the Servant 16Resurrection of the Servant

Luke Author Luke, a Gentile doctor, associate of Paul’s and writer of the book of Acts By Acts 16:10, Luke is traveling with Paul and continues to do so through the rest of Paul’s journeys Luke 1:1–4. A record of Jesus life compiled from eyewitnesses & those who served with Him

Luke Time of Writing Acts 1:1 - prior to completion of the book of Acts  Before 62 A.D.

Luke Audience Luke is writing to a Greek man named Theophilus

Luke Theme A history with a purpose in presenting Jesus - the Son of man who came to seek & save the lost (Luke 19:10) Luke presents Jesus as the savior of all people regardless of ethnicity, wealth, position, gender, or past.

John Author References to author - John 1:14; 19:26, 35; 20:2-8; 21:20-14 “the disciple who Jesus loved” Consistent testimony of the early church: the apostle John, the son of Zebedee, brother of James

John Author James and John were rough and impetuous, but were changed after becoming disciples of Jesus John’s education is unknown, but never underestimate what the Holy Spirit can do in a person’s life

John Time of Writing Late 80's or early 90's  (John writes Revelation while exiled on Patmos A.D.)

John Audience Ephesians probably the first to receive it - but to all that they might believe in Jesus Earlier gospel accounts allow John to concentrate on additional events and teachings for his gospel

John Theme John 20: so that people will believe in Jesus, the Son of God, and have life in His name The Gospel of John is often the first book recommended to non-Christians so that they may believe

Conclusions Each gospel in important in gaining a full understanding of our Lord Jesus Christ Our goal is to draw closer to Him and walk with Him in righteousness according to His commands

I Love To Tell The Story #444 I Love To Tell The Story #444 I love to tell the story Of unseen things above, Of Jesus and His glory, Of Jesus and His love; Hankey, Arabella Catherine / Fischer, William© Public Domain ARR UBP – CCLI License No

I love to tell the story Because I know ‘tis true, It satisfies my longings As nothing else can do.

I love to tell the story! ‘Twill be my theme in glory- To tell the old, old story Of Jesus and His love.

I love to tell the story ‘Tis pleasant to repeat What seems, each time I tell it, More wonderfully sweet;

I love to tell the story, For some have never heard The message of salvation From God’s own holy Word.

I love to tell the story! ‘Twill be my theme in glory- To tell the old, old story Of Jesus and His love.

I love to tell the story, For those who know it best Seem hungering and thirsting To hear it like the rest;

And when in scenes of glory I sing the new, new song, ‘Twill be the old, old story That I have loved so long.

I love to tell the story! ‘Twill be my theme in glory- To tell the old, old story Of Jesus and His love.

O Sacred Head, Now Wounded #316 O sacred Head, now wounded With grief and shame weighed down; Now scornfully surrounded With thorns, Thine only crown. O sacred Head, now wounded With grief and shame weighed down; Now scornfully surrounded With thorns, Thine only crown. How pale Thou art with anguish, With sore abuse and scorn; How does that visage languish, Which once was bright as morn! How pale Thou art with anguish, With sore abuse and scorn; How does that visage languish, Which once was bright as morn!

What Thou, my Lord, has suffered Was all for sinners’ gain; Mine, mine was the transgression, But Thine the deadly pain. What Thou, my Lord, has suffered Was all for sinners’ gain; Mine, mine was the transgression, But Thine the deadly pain.

Lo here I fall, my Savior; ‘Tis I deserve Thy place. Look on me with thy favor; Assist me with Thy grace. Lo here I fall, my Savior; ‘Tis I deserve Thy place. Look on me with thy favor; Assist me with Thy grace.

What language shall I borrow To thank Thee, dearest Friend, For this, Thy dying sorrow, Thy pity without end? What language shall I borrow To thank Thee, dearest Friend, For this, Thy dying sorrow, Thy pity without end?

O make me Thine forever; And, should I fainting be, Lord, let me never, never Outlive my love to Thee O make me Thine forever; And, should I fainting be, Lord, let me never, never Outlive my love to Thee
