Congressman John Lewis BY ELYSE JONES

Who is John Lewis?  Civil Rights Leader, Freedom Rider, and Congressman  Birthdate: February 21, 1940  John Lew is still alive.

John Lewis’ Early Life:  In his early life, he grew up on his family farm with his brothers, sisters, and cousin.  In college, he became a leader of the Nashville sit-ins. I learned a sit-in was blacks would go to restaurants and sit for food service. Before they would have to eat in the back or outside.  He participated in the Freedom Rides.

Why is John Lewis Important to Black History?  He did many things to help African American rights  He helped lead the the freedom riders and several marches

John Lewis’ Character Traits:  Courage  Leadership  Perseverance

Fun Facts about John Lewis:  John Lewis received a public apology from a former Klansman on national television.  He has been an U.S. Congressman in Georgia since  He has received many awards for his dedication in the Civil Rights movement and his continued work today.

John Lewis and Felton L. Hudson  In 2009, my great grandfather, Felton Hudson, was presented the President’s Fulfilling the Dream Award at the University of Georgia. John Lewis was the speaker for the Martin Luther King Day breakfast where the awards were given. Even though I don’t remember, it makes me feel proud.
