Chapter 2

How to Think Like a Scientist How do scientists think? Do scientists think differently than everyone else? Why or why not? *Write-Pair-Share In your notebook, write a few sentences answering the question above. When time is called, discuss your answer with the person next to you. Be prepared to share with the class.

When a scientist wants to figure something out, what does he do?

Example Using the steps to the scientific method, solve the following problem: You just got your driver’s license and want to buy a car.

Application Now think of a problem that directly applies to you that the scientific method could help you to solve. Write down in your notebook the steps of the scientific method as it applies to your problem. After time is called, be prepared to share.

Measurement In order for scientists to solve problems and prove their results, they must make precise and accurate measurements. Brainstorm synonyms for the underlined words above. Write down 2 synonyms and a definition for each word. Novel Ideas Only: After time is called, we will share using this activity.

Graphic representation

The Metric System What is the metric system? When did it come about? Why doesn’t the United States use it? Who uses it and who doesn’t?

Metric Prefixes You must be able to convert from nano- to tera- and back.

Examples To convert from one unit to another, just move the decimal place mm = 100 cm = 10 dm = 1 m = 0.1 dam = 0.01 hm = km Which way would you move the decimal place moving from: mm to km? km to mm?

Practice Calculate the following metric conversions: 1000 mg = _______ g 1 L = _______ mL 160 cm = _______ mm 14 km = _______ m 109 g = _______ kg 250 m = _______ km

Metric Units What are the different metric units of measurement?

Homework Complete the assigned worksheet Write down a problem that someone you know has and use the scientific method to solve it. Find at least 3 store-bought food items and write down What is it? How is it measured on front of the package? How big is a serving size? Bonus: Write down nutrition information such as calories, fat content, sodium, carbohydrates, and protein
