What is Measurement? A description that includes a number and a unit. – Used to describe an observation. What does it mean to make observations? I will be able to describe what measurement is and the basic units of measurement.

Why do we use standard units of measurement? Metric System – Scientists needed units of measurement to be standardized to: 1. Allow people around the world to share data. – Improving accuracy 2. To repeat another’s experiments. I will be able to describe what measurement is and the basic units of measurement.

What are the basic Units of Measurement? 3 Basic Units of Measurement – Length (distance) m (meter) – Mass g (gram) – Volume L – Liter I will be able to describe what measurement is and the basic units of measurement.

What is the International System (SI) of Units? Measurement system devised by the French. – Metric system is called the SI system. The language for all scientific measurement. Five of the Seven base SI units used to express: – Length (m = meter) – Mass – Time – Temperature – Volume I will be able to describe / use the different tools units of measurement used for science.

How can we make very large or small measurements easy to work with? Uses prefixes or scientific notation to make it less confusing to work with very big or very small numbers. – Prefix- one ore more letters or syllables added to the beginning of a word to change its meaning. I will be able to convert units of metric measurement using prefixes.
