The Integumentary System Includes the membranous covering, sweat and oil glands, hair and nails 3.2 “integumentary” comes from the Latin word that means.

Accessory Organs Integumentary System

Accessory Organs Small structures embedded in the skin What are some examples?

Hair Follicle: base that hair grows out of embedded in the dermis Shaft: hair that extends from the skin Hair acts to keep us warm! All hair above skin is dead and keratinized

Muscles Arrector Pilli-attached to hair follicle, raises hair to keep body warm (goosebumps)

Glands Sebaceous Glands-small gland that secretes oily sebum onto hair follicle Sweat Glands-coiled glands in dermis that produce sweat Eccrine Glands-major sweat glands, found all over the body Appocrine Glands-active after puberty, found in the pubic area and armpits, activated during sexual intercourse

Blood Vessels Capillaries (really small blood vessels) are found in the dermis Bigger blood vessels are found in the hypodermis Supply the skin with nutrients and fluids

Adipose Fat found mostly in hypodermis Keeps body warm, stores extra energy
