Warm Up p. 25 “The world would be better off with only one country/government in charge.” Do you agree or disagree with this statement? Explain.

Split of the Roman Empire p. 26 The beginning of the end of Rome

Where did the problem start? When Rome switched from a Republic to an Empire, the territory grew The bigger the empire got, the harder it was to rule

Emperor Diocletian Diocletian splits the empire into East and West He rules the West

Constantine Moves the capital of the Roman Empire to Byzantium The east was more prosperous and safer Renames Byzantium -Constantinople

Great Schism The two halves of the Empire practiced Christianity differently.

Great Schism Christianity splits into two types: Roman Catholicism in the West and Eastern Orthodox in the Eastern half

Start of the Byzantine Empire The Eastern portion of Rome remains strong after the split and becomes the BYZANTINE EMPIRE

Roman Empire Splits Western Division Centered in Rome Eastern division centered in Constantinople Barbarian invasions and other factors cause the collapse of the Western Division of the Empire Roman Catholicism becomes the dominant in West Eastern Orthodoxy takes hold in Eastern Europe (Russia, Turkey, Etc) Develops into the Byzantine Empire Diocletian splits Rome p. 25

Fall of Rome The Western half of the Roman Empire fell once and for all when the Goths (tribes from Germany) conquered the city of Rome in 476 A.D. This probably would not have happened if Rome was not weak from other problems going on in the Empire

What happened when the Goths took over? The Goths and tribes that took over Rome never developed a formal government to replace the empire, so Western Europe entered a period of chaos and disorder.

The end of an era The fall of Rome marks the end of the Classical Period- a period of history characterized by the dominance of Greece and Rome

Causes for the fall of the Western Roman Empire Series of weak and bad emperors Political turmoil and civil wars Economic and political decline of ruling class Decline of the Roman bloodline The final sacking of Rome by the Goths in 476AD Series of Barbarian invasions Christianity challenges Roman religion Series of outbreaks of different diseases

Obituary for Rome p. separate sheet On a separate sheet, write an obituary in memory of Roman Empire. Things to include: – Information on the birth (think Caesar, the Senate, Augustus here) – Achievements (at least 5) – Survivors (think of its “sister empire”) – Cause of Death
