Introduction: You are employed by a major teen magazine that each month focuses on societal problems that can affect teens and/or their families. This months feature topic is about drugs. Your job as part of the magazine team is to research this problem and educate your readers through an informative essay and question/answer column. You will also present the information learned to your classmates by doing a persuasive presentation. “Just Say No” WebQuest Mrs. Zucca 8 th Grade FACS

Task Your role for this months magazine feature is: Choose a drug to research Write an informative article detailing the danger of this drug to your audience Create a question/answer column geared to teens highlighting the dangers of the drug researched. Present your information to the class through a persuasive Google presentation.

Process 1.First, explore the following links: In the upper right hand column under Play It, take the Bonko’s Body Quiz : This will test your knowledge on how drugs effect the body. Choose a drug from the drug links listed under Topics on Drug Abuse OR the NIDA for teens site. 2. Once you have chosen the drug you want to research, go to the West Middle School library home page. From there, you will go to find a project tab, 8th grade, drug research project. This site will have all of the requirements for the magazine article you will be writing. You will use the library databases: Gale and Worldbook in addition to the NIDA and PBSKids sitesfor your research information. You will fill out a graphic organizer that will help organize your information. Requirements for the magazine article: Beginning of article must include a fictional story describing someone whose life was affected by using this drug, or about the actual user of this drug. This should be a paragraph. Description of how this drug effects the body, mind, mood, and behavrior. This part of the article should be a minimum 2 paragraphs. The last paragraph of your article will include statistic information related to this drug. Examples would include, how many people are addicted to this drug, average age of user, etc. Think numbers, percent, dates, or general information about a group of people.

Process 3.Create a question/answer column for teens using information you have learned while researching your drug topic. You should have 5 questions that teens might ask about this drug, and answer them with reliable and credible information. Remember, these are questions other teens would have about these particular drugs. Use this link to get an idea of what the question/answer format might look like. Process 4.Last, in groups of 3 that I assign (based on the drug topic chosen), create a google persuasive presentation for the class that seeks to persuade students to “Just Say No”. The presentation must have at least 5 slides detailing why students should never try the drug you researched. Make sure you include all of the information you have learned while working on this webquest. Each slide must have a graphic and large font so the class can easily read it. The requirements for the google presentation can be found at the following link: projects.html projects.html Fill out the group activity report and turn in at the end of the project. This is where you will tell me who was responsible for each slide and will include your feedback regarding how the group worked together to get the presentation completed.
