Starter Be prepared to show completed writing assignment from yesterday’s class. Complete Thursday’s activity for FoW. In LN, answer the following question: Is there any connection between the migration of the butterflies and humans? Identify it and explain it, using specific details from the text and from personal knowledge. OBJECTIVE: SWBAT read and analyze poetry.

Unit 1, Part 2, Day 3 August 4, 2016

Homework Complete activities not completed in class. Read independently Answer question from DOK calendar in Reading Log 4 Review LN notes; memorize terms and definitions Reading Scrapbook Pages 1, 2, and 3 are due 8/16. Cold Read Test for Unit 1 – Friday, 8/5.

Collective nouns Copy the following definition in Grammar notebook. Collective nouns are nouns that are treated as singular even though they denote a group of individual persons or things. (Examples: team, herd, orchestra, band)

Collective nouns In Grammar notebook, list as many examples as you can of collective nouns. Create three sentences using collective nouns as the subject of the sentence. (Hint: since collective nouns are considered units, they are singular and take a singular verb.)

Poetry Today we are reading a poem that is more challenging than “Where I’m From”. Be patient, and put your best effort into close reading of the text. We will be completing the close reading together. Please keep pace with the class, even if you are tempted to move ahead at a quicker pace. First read: get the gist of the poem. Second read: focus on vocabulary. Star words that are unfamiliar and define them in margins. Third read: listen and read along.

Poetry Close Reading Fourth read: answer questions in margins/LN as we read. What is a sanctuary? From line 2, what can we infer about the reason the butterflies have come to Mexico? What belief did the ancestors of the campesinos hold about the butterflies? What now threatens the butterflies? Which lines reveal this threat? Who are the “experts” and what is “their usual decree”? As used in the following lines, what does the word vigilantes mean? Who are the vigilantes and who are the pilgrims? “In the lofty remains of the cloud forest/vigilantes guide the pilgrims under the dark canopy/of ancient trees and into the wind of butterfly wings.” What is implied by calling them pilgrims? How does the author use imagery in lines to help the reader visualize the world of the butterfly? In line 27, who are the pilgrims watching? In lines 32-39, what contrast does the speaker draw between the butterflies and humans?

Poetry Analysis Mark the meter (rhythm pattern) and the rhyme scheme of the poem. How would you characterize this poem (sonnet, ode, haiku)? Why? Find examples of sound devices in the poem. Mark and label them on the handout. Rhyme includes partial rhyme. There are two types: Assonance is partial rhyme where the vowel sounds of the accented syllables are the same but the ending consonant sound is different. (Example: meat and beef) Consonance is partial rhyme where the ending consonant sound is the same but the preceding vowel sound differs. (Example: meat and bait) Can you find examples of figurative language? Mark handout as you identify the poetic devices. Be prepared to share what you have found.

Unit Essential Vocabulary Quiz your partner to review the terms and definitions on Unit 1 Essential Vocabulary list.

Finish Early? Read silently in novel until the end of class.
