Vocabulary

City A very large important town

Parish/county A division or part of a state with its own local government. It includes several cities.

State/Province A political unit that is a part of a country

Country A part of the world with its own borders and government

Continent One of the seven large divisions of land on the Earth

Homework After each vocabulary word put where you live Example: State/Province– a political unit that is part of a country (Louisiana)

Day 2 Vocanos Hurricanes Tornados How do they affect the land?

Volcanoes Destroy vegetation with flowing lava and ash falling from sky All things die under lava; less area to grow plants Lava turns into rock creating new land and rocks

Hurricanes Erosion of land( loss of land) Strong winds destroy plants and vegetation Too much water can cause soil to be useless for growing crops

Key or legend A key or legend is an area on the map that shows us what each symbol represents.

Scale Scale is the section of the map that shows how much smaller the map is compared to the real area it represents.

Directions Directions tell which way to go.

Compass Rose A compass rose is a symbol on a map which indicates the directions for a map.

Cardinal Directions North South East West

Equator The equator is a zero degree line of latitude that separates the Northern hemisphere from the Southern Hemisphere.

Prime Meridian The prime meridian is the zero degree line of longitude that separates the eastern and western hemisphere.
