S. JOÃO BATISTA ESTATE

S. João Batista Estate has a total area of around 115 hectares, of which 85 ha are planted with vineyards. Among the varietals planted the majority are for red wines (around 76 ha). Traditional Portuguese varietals: Castelão, Trincadeira Preta, Touriga Nacional and Touriga Franca (60%). International varietals: Syrah, Alicante Bouschet and Cabernet Sauvignon (40%). S. Joao Batista Estate is the largest winemaking centres of the group with capacity for kilos of grapes. It produces Doc white, red, rosé and sparkling wines and Tejo Regional Wines. The vines are grown in an integrated production system. It is also equipped with a traditional winery that combines knowledge and tradition with innovation, using new technologies such as temperature control in all fermentation vats and epoxy coating in the traditional concrete vats, besides a modern pneumatic press. It has an ageing room for quality wines that is one of the largest in the Tejo wine region. S. JOÃO BATISTA ESTATE

Place to visit in the area: “RESERVA NATURAL DO PAUL DO BOQUILOBO” Since 1981, the “Reserva Natural do Paul do Boquilobo” is considered by UNESCO as a World Biosphere Reserve. This was the first protected area in Portugal to join the World Network of Biosphere Reserves. The Reserve is recognized as an important natural wetland fundamental for the refuge of many birds being a local of breeding, feeding and resting in migration routes. Typical restaurant: Restaurant Casa das Enguias – Boquilobo.
