May 16-May 20 is the Last Week to Check Out Library Books All Library books are due the following week, May Students are responsible for payment of lost/damaged materials. Be looking for s from the library letting you know if your child has overdue materials. At the end of the school year, families who have missing library materials will have an interruption to their access of Skyward until the materials are paid for or returned. Please let me know if you want to be considered for a scholarship fund. Math We are still working our way through Math Unit 9. This unit will cover multiplying and dividing with multiples of 10, 100 and 1,000. Please have students work on their multiplication facts at home during this unit. May Book Talk: Historical Fiction This month students will be reading a Historical Fiction book and completing all the necessary components of a book talk (the outline is posted on my website). These will be due on Tuesday, May 24 th. Writing: We are half way through our Fairytale writing unit. Students have been working on writing their own, adapted version of a classic fairytale. We have studied characteristics of fairytales such as descriptive language, using dialogue and showing actions between characters. We have also discussed how to make meaningful changes—changes that will create a domino effect of changes throughout the entire story. Reading: In reading, students have started literature circles. They have been reading just right novels and practicing different ways to discuss the book with their classmates. We have focused on asking each other comprehension questions, providing summaries, finding evidence in the novel for illustrations, and expanding vocabulary. Each week, students choose a new job that focus on the above tasks to share with the group. Social Studies We have started our last social studies unit of the year— Pioneers. Students will be reading If you Traveled West in a Covered Wagon to learn about life on the Oregon Trail. As a class, we will be “traveling” the Oregon Trail together and outlining our travels on a map. Students will be keeping a journal of all of the adventures and challenges they will face. Once we arrive in Oregon, we will begin our Apple Valley School simulation. This is a fun and engaging way for students to learn more about what life and school were like for pioneers. We will end our unit by visiting Pioneer Farms on June 7 th followed by our Pioneer Picnic on June 8 th.
