Acceleration G. Futch/J. Willis CMS

9-3 Vocabulary Acceleration – rate that velocity changes: increase or decrease in speed or change in direction Initial speed – speed at the beginning Final speed – speed at the end

Acceleration Acceleration can happen three ways. 1) Increase in speed (Positive Acceleration) 2) Decrease in speed (Negative Acceleration or Deceleration) 3) Change in Direction

Change in Velocity is Acceleration It can be a change in speed or direction or both SituationWhat Changes Raindrop falling faster and faster Runner going around a turn on a track Car taking an exit off a highway Train arriving at a station Car stopping at a traffic light Baseball caught by catcher Baseball hit by a batter speed Direction/speed Speed & direction speed Speed & direction

Are these things accelerating? Car traveling at constant speed of 65mi/h. Runner rounding a turn. Baseball pitched. Stopping for school bus. Swerving to miss a dog in road. Riding the Ferris wheel at the county fair. yes no

Calculating Acceleration Acceleration = Final speed – Initial speed Time Unit for Acceleration will have TWO TIMES m/s 2 or m/s/s mph/s or km/h/min

As a roller coaster car starts down a slope, its speed is 4m/s. But 3 seconds later, at the bottom, its speed is 22m/s. What is its average acceleration?

A falling raindrop accelerates from 10m/s to 30 m/s in 2 sec. What is the raindrop’s acceleration

Calculate Acceleration What is a race car’s average acceleration if its speed changes from 0m/s to 40m/s in 4 s?

You try… An airplane accelerates on a runway to 40m/s after 5seconds. What is the acceleration?

Acceleration because speed is increasing. Acceleration because speed is decreasing.

Acceleration before the red dot. Speed is increasing. No acceleration after the red dot. Speed is staying the same.

No acceleration because speed is constant.

Acceleration because speed is changing.

No acceleration before the red dot. Speed is constant. No acceleration after the red dot because the object is stopped.

Label the arrows for a car Use the following terms: Positive acceleration Deceleration Rest Start

9-3 Target Questions 1) How do you calculate acceleration? 2) Acceleration is either a change in ____ or ____. 3) Negative acceleration is also called ________. 4) Would the slope on a line graph be steeper if the acceleration is greater or lesser? 5) How does acceleration differ from speed? 6) Is turning a corner acceleration?
