WACREN EduID Fostering Identity Federations in West and Central Africa 3rd Sci-GaIA Workshop Dar es Salaam, Tanzania – 5 th September Omo Oaiya

Federated Identity Systems  Identity Provider (IdP) - entities (e.g. academic and research institutions, enterprises, etc.) authenticating their users and certifying their identities.  Service Provider (SP) - entities providing services to the federation. They receive individual users' personal data, under consent and provide personalized services.  Federation – Circle of Trust including one or more IdPs and SPs enabling Single Sign On (SSO)  eduGAIN - interconnects identity federations around the world, simplifying access for the global research and education community

WACREN EduID Federation as a Service (FaaS) pilot Aim: to promote the use and adoption of Identity Federations and shared e-Research services End Goals  Single Sign On (SSO)  Role based access to network resources  Support for traveling scholars  Tools for collaboration  Shared access to remote instruments  …...

Objectives  Bootstrap establishment of NREN Identity Federations  Resolve implementation issues  Unreliable server infrastructure and issues with electricity  Scarce human resources with skills to deploy and maintain  Unfamiliarity with identity management systems  Limited funding and resources to operate

Approach Simultaneous focus on Technology and Policy  Policy and Practice  Federation policy development workshops  Localised templates for federation policy and practice statements  Technology Support  Federation as a Service (FaaS)  Create Identity Federation - Campus or NREN  Register Identity or Service Provider  Identity Provider (IdP) in the Cloud  Training to use WACREN EduiD

Conclusion and outlook  Training for NRENs to be Federation Operators  Support NRENs to train members to develop robust campus identity systems  Host cross-federation components centrally in WACREN cloud  Develop a technical framework for easy deployment (Ansible)  Provide localised policy templates for easier adaptation  Provide regional use-cases to encourage adoption – library content licensing, international collaborations, portals
