Colonization- “Brave New World” We will be reviewing information that will be setting the table for the start of the United States as a country. Place information that answers the question for each.

1. How many Native Americans lived in North and South America before Europeans arrived to the New World? Hunter-gatherers came across a land bridge from Asia to present day Alaska. Between Million Native Americans lived in two thousand distinct cultures in the Americas.

2. Christopher Columbus: Where did Columbus land when he arrived in the New World? In 1492, he landed in the islands of the Caribbean. (He never set foot in the land of the United States.) His discovery led to colonization and conquest of the Americas.

What was the name of the passage many explorers set out to find? The Northwest Passage. A water route that would lead to Asia by heading North of America. It does not exist (too much ice).

3. What is the name given to the sharing of ideas, foods, crops, animals, languages, cultures, and religions between the New World and the Old World (Europe)? The Columbian Exchange

4. What was responsible for eliminating nearly about 85% of the Native Americans population? European diseases killed off between 64 and 85 million Native Americans. Diseases like small pox were devastating to the natives who had to immunity to illnesses that were new to them.

5. Who are the major countries that helped settle the Americas? Major Countries were: France, England, Spain, Portugal, Sweden, and Holland (Dutch) Big “3”- England, France and Spain England- established the 13 colonies on the East Coast of North America. Spain- had the most land from Texas to California, as well as Mexico, Central and South America. France- claimed Canada as well as the Mississippi River Valley.

6. Why did the “Big 3” race to the Americas? The 3 G’s The countries and explorers wanted to gain the lands for three key reasons: 1.Gold= $$$$$$$$$$$$$$ 2.God- spread religion and Christianity 3.Glory- fame.

7. What was the first permanent English settlement in the New World? When was it founded? First permanent English settlement was Jamestown, Virginia. Successful with the help of John Smith in 1607

8. What group of settlers came to the New World in 1620 seeking religious freedom? The Pilgrims settled in 1620 in Plymouth, Massachusetts from England.

9. What new crop did the Jamestown settlers discover that would become the #1 cash crop of the English colonies? The cash crop in the English colonies was tobacco.

10. What was the name of the trade routes that brought slaves to the Americas? The Triangular Trade was an exchange of goods from Europe, Africa and the Americas. The voyage from Africa to the Americas was called the Middle Passage.

11. What were two reasons that Africans were preferred as slaves over Native Americans? The Africans were more immune to European diseases. There were many of them that were captured from Africa, and when they were brought to the Americas, they had no where to run.
