Welcome! 6 th Grade Curriculum Night School Year

Who’s Who  Dr. White – Math  Mrs. Boeckholt – Social Studies & Science  Mrs. Rodi – English Language Arts

Expectations  Students are held to high expectations regarding the quality of their work and turning their work in on time.  Students are held to high expectations regarding their behavior in class and on campus as they are considered to be role models for the school.  Students are expected to write their assignments in their agenda books each day.  Students and parents should be checking grades online on a regular basis.

Homework  Daily homework in math  Reading logs and AR vocab packets are due every other Friday  Science and social studies is assigned as needed to help students master content

Math Curriculum – 6 th Grade  Multiply and divide multi-digit decimals and fractions  Writing and solving algebraic expressions  Area (parallelograms, triangles, trapezoids)  Rates and ratios; percent problems  Real world context of positive and negative numbers  Solving and graphing inequalities  Surface area of prisms and pyramids  Statistical measures  Data displays

Math Curriculum – Accelerated 6 th Grade  Content is the same as other classes.  The class will move at an accelerated pace.  Homework and assessments will differ and include more advanced problems.

Science Curriculum  Scientific Method (Spring Science Fair)  Researching, designing, and conducting controlled investigations  Identifying human contributions to science, past and present (many times tied in with Social Studies)  Learning about scientific careers  Life science: cells, plants, human body systems (circulatory, digestive, skeletal)

Science Curriculum  Weather on Earth  Earth’s atmosphere (structure and composition) and climate  Exploring how different types of energy( mechanical, electrical, thermal) are transformed and transferred  How various types of energy are generated and stored (renewable and non renewable)

English Language Arts: Writing  Explores a variety of types of writing for various purposes and audiences, including narrative, informative, argument, research reports, letters, poetry, and multi-media presentations  Focuses on 6-Traits/Jane Schaffer models  Emphasizes writing process, meeting deadlines, and using trait-based rubrics; regular practice on myaccess.com  Structured mini-lessons cover specific skills, including grammar, usage, and mechanics

English Language Arts: Literature  Learn and apply reading strategies to works of fiction and non-fiction  Focus on literary elements, to include plot, conflict, characterization, point of view, setting, figurative language, mood, symbol, and theme  Text evidence practice  Embedded vocabulary study, and Greek Roots  Link to online literature textbook located on my web page

English Language Arts: Independent Reading  Self-selected reading expected in class and at home on a regular basis  Using Accelerated Reader, students will track their own reading growth and turn in Reading Logs biweekly  Reading goals based on individual reading range  AR Vocabulary/Lit Packets also due biweekly

RTI (Response to Intervention)/Mandarin Chinese  45 minutes a day  Chinese is every 3 rd day for 30 minutes  Other days are RTI:  Silent reading  AR Quizzes  Extra help and practice of academic skills  Make-up quizzes/tests and classwork from absences

Parent Volunteers Needed  Copy Parent(s)  Fall Basket Coordinator  Please sign up for PTO. The PTO pays for the lunch aides, the library aide, updated the computers, document cameras, AR system, books for the library, classroom supplies and so much more.
