 Possible Destinations  College  Apprenticeship  Workplace  University  Consider a ‘Gap Year’

 Consider their interests, strengths, learning styles  Many pathways may lead to same destination  Attend open houses, job shadow, look through program guides, web searches  Talk to teachers, employers, guidance counsellors, career counsellors

 Job Preparation and Job search  Connecting with Employment centre, CSE  Volunteering as evidence for citizenship, or job experience  Resume and reference building  Take coop courses in high school

 Working with a Trades person on the job  Attending a college for in school portion of training, ~ 10 weeks/ year  Accumulating hours of work and levels of school training  Taking the certification exam for Journeyperson

 Certificate (1 year)  Diploma (2 years)  Advanced Diploma (3 years)  Bachelor degrees now available at College  Joint or Collaborative degrees  Graduate Certificates  Apprenticeships  Coop Programs available  Articulation agreements to transfer to university

 General Bachelor’s Degree: 3 years  Honours Bachelor’s Degree: 4 years with 70% average after 3 years  Joint or Collaborative Degrees: take courses partially at college and partially at university  Advanced Degrees: Masters, PhD’s  Professional Degrees: Medicine, Education, Law

 OCAS  Ontario College Application Service  February 1 st, 2017 deadline for equal consideration  OUAC  Ontario University Application Centre  January 11 th, 2017 deadline December 23 rd, 2016 application deadline for NG to avoid delays in processing applications Tutorials for online applications will be occurring in the coming weeks during MSIP classes.

  Info on each Ontario college  ‘How to Apply’ tutorial is on OCAS website   need OEN and make a username and password  Get your SIN card now  $95 for 5 Ontario college program picks (limit of 3 programs for any one college)  Students will be called down out of MSIP to start their applications by the end of October

 OSSD  Marks and required courses (often look at gr. 11, seldom at final marks of semester 2 gr. 12)  May require additional material  Essay, questionnaire, resume, references, portfolio, audition, admission tests (math, science, English), interview, information sessions, volunteer, life, or work experiences,

  Info on each university program, cut-offs averages, prerequisites  ‘How to apply’ tutorials, applications   Need a PIN from OUAC, given out by Guidance  $150 for 3 Ontario universities and $50 for each additional choice ***  Students who have indicated university destination will be called down from MSIP when we receive their PINs.

 OSSD  Average calculated on top 6 gr. 12 U or M courses.  Last years cut-off averages can be viewed on electronicinfo.ca  Prerequisites for each specific program  Additional material  Portfolio, essay, personal statements of experience, personal info forms

 College  Earliest offer Feb. 1 then multiple rounds up to May  Must respond by May 1st to an offer. LAST ‘yes’ STICKS!  If oversubscribed or requiring additional material, these programs will be the latest to make an offer  University  Conditional offers come out over the Spring with multiple rounds until end of May  Early offers based on high gr.11 marks out earlier  June 1 st, earliest date that you might have to accept and/or pay for a program

  To find steps to apply  FAQs  OYAP may use hours completed from Coop in an approved trade location during High School toward full apprenticeship hours after graduation (if they match up).

 1 year certificate programs at College  gives students a set of skills in a particular trade.  good for student who cannot find a training work site  Hours may be transferable towards full Apprenticeship.  Private Career Colleges  ‘Workplace’ pathway/courses are acceptable for some programs. Check with each college’s apprenticeship section or workplace pathways.  Earn as they learn

 Scholarships, Bursaries, Awards  OSAP: Ontario Student Assistance Program  Get their SIN card now  Post-secondary Coop programs  Savings from Summer jobs  Bank of ‘Mom and Dad’  Student Lines of Credit  Savings

     Make sure to click on the OSAP access window for answers to FAQs  Watch for specific scholarships/bursaries for the school they choose to go to (deadlines)
