Business Architecture – Target “We want to see our enterprise IT strategy through the lens of our business capabilities” “Target’s Business Capability Framework is the common language of the enterprise” “We need to express our business strategies in terms of the underlying operating model changes and corresponding business capabilities”

Our Journey so Far 4 Business Capability Foundation Identified Core Differentiators IT-based Capability Planning Business- based Capability Planning Created first version of our business capability framework Iterated to try and capture all aspects of Target’s business model Capability model is only as good as its usage Classified each capability in the framework as either a strategic differentiator or “base” capability Capability model was then able to be used as an investment and resource mgt tool Get executive fingerprints on your capability framework and associated key concepts Created a rolling 5 year IT strategic plan for Target Capabilities allowed IT to express our plan in terms the business could understand Created a re-usable IT strategy framework Creation engenders ownership Created an executive business architecture charter Identified capability owners across the enterprise Working to define details around roles / responsibilities Participation in the process engenders ownership Clarity is key Key Milestones Lessons

Business Capability Ownership Roles Business Capability Owner – ultimately accountable for the capability from an executive perspective Business Capability Leader/Manager – day-to-day capability manager that helps mature the people, process, technology and data for a given capability Business Capability Steward - Responsible for executing Capability Strategic Planning process, representing capability in various settings and scenarios, leading capability-based exercises, and serving as capability representative Business Capability Stakeholder – may not have ownership or management of a given capability, but is an important voice in providing input into where the capability needs to go in the future 5
