Healthy Eating on a Budget University Life

Objectives Discuss the similarities and differences between cheap and expensive foods Work out a budget in relation to food and shopping Write a recipe for a simple meal-Cooking on a budget Compare Asda prices to Aldi List ways to save money

Food Critic Task: You are now a group of food critics who’s job it is to compare the quality of different items. You will complete one plate at a time (when I say so) and fill out the hand out provided. As part of the criteria you must decide for each item which one is the discount supermarket produce and which is the popular supermarket produce

Reasons for choices made Feedback to group/board…..

Budget Take a look at the cost of living sheet – Work out how much money you will have to spend per week and per day – Do you think this is a lot of money?

READY STEADY COOK! In your groups you have 5 minutes to produce a recipe, with the list of ingredients provided, and create a HEALTHY meal on a budget Think about the Eatwell Plate! Red Tomatoes vs Green Peppers…Ready Steady Cook!

How to cut costs Split into groups Create a mind-map about how you can save money on shopping, cut costs and increase money input LEGALLY! Discuss your ideas

Keeping to a Budget Plan Purchase Prepare It is a known fact that we tend to eat more unhealthily and spend extra money if we don’t plan our meals

Consolidation Choose own brand, discount brands or shop in the reduced aisle Make sure you budget and don’t leave yourself without money or food PRIORITISE! Be creative and cook from scratch Remember portion sizes and freeze leftovers Increase money input by finding a job, car boot sales and cutting down spending on unwanted items
